Noongarpedia
Noongarpedia
Full report on the Noongarpedia project published 31 December 2016;
- Full Report is at http://cultural-science.org/journal/index.php/culturalscience/issue/view/15
The Noongarpedia project started in February 2014 with the question of Why was there no noongar language Wikipedia?. While this appears at first glance to be the simplest of questions to answer with "well no one has started it yet" the reality of creating a full language project is extremely complex. We didn't just have to follow the steps outlined at meta and incubator we had to deal with a community that has suffered 200 years of abuse, neglect and deliberate outright intentional decisions in an attempt wipe their existence away. The Noongar people are from the South West of Western Australia and like many Indigenous Australian cultures are one of the longest existing cultures anywhere in the world.
The project had multiple aspects to investigate and answer the primary question posed, to do that they had also make it possible for nys.wikipedia to be created, currently its at the incubator stage with about 500 pages 70-80 contributors. The group leading the project were Professor Len Collard (University of Western Australia), Professor Kim Scott (Curtin University), Professor John Hartley (Curtin University) and Niall Lucy (deceased), researchers Ingrid Cumming and Jennie Buchanan. Ingrid and Jennie organised all the outreach events, Professor Dave Palmer (Murdoch University), Professor Ben Smith (UWA), Clint Bracknell (University of Sydney), Damien Webb (State Library of Western Australia), Gideon Digby (Wikimedia Australia), many Nyoongar Elders and many Wikipedians also assisted on the projects development. The success came because of the way in which relationships were built, respect paid to the laws and customs of the Noongar people as well as ensuring that Noongar community was not just part of the project but helping to guide its development.
The project conducted talks, workshops, wikibombs and developed Wikipedians in Residence the report discusses in-depth all aspects of those and the outcomes. We also worked with students from 6 years old to adult post graduate students. There are insights to many aspects of working with the various communities, importantly for GLAMs working with oppressed minorities and Indigenous cultures with primarily intangible sources its offers a guide to work with Wikimedia projects as a way of breaking down barriers, developing connections and sharing knowledge.
Preparing the future GLAM generation; Decreasing the gender gap on the web
Preparing the future GLAM generation
Advanced training on outreach at the University of São Paulo
The User Group Wikimedia in Brazil and the University of São Paulo Center for Neuromathematics (NeuroMat) partnered to provide an advanced training on how to organize Wikimedia education programs and outreach initiatives in December. Nine two-hour training sessions were held from December 12 to 15 at NeuroMat, and ten undergraduate and graduate students attended. Sessions combined lectures --that were given by Sturm, Horadrim and Mariliawikipedia-- and hands-on activities, such as drafting up subject-specific Wikipedia handouts for educational activities and setting up strategies for edit-a-thons and GLAM partnerships. As a follow-up actvity, revised versions of these handouts will be published and outreach activities students have worked on will be set up. A description of this training is provided on Wikiversity, in Portuguese.
Initial uploads of the GLAM with the Museum of Mathematics
Last month, we presented a new GLAM initiative with the Museum of Mathematics (Matemateca), and initial uploads have already been made. These initial uploads are a test for uploading a larger set of images using Pattypan. This initiative is organized by the UG Wikimedia in Brazil, NeuroMat and independent volunteer Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton. Uploads may be seen under this specific category on the Commons. Some images from the collection may be seen below.

Testing GLAMpipe for uploads on veterinary anatomy
The next 30-image bundle of the GLAM initiative with the University of São Paulo Museum of Veterinary Anatomy will be done as a test for GLAMpipe, a recently funded uploading tool that has been developed by Finnish volunteers. The expectation is that GLAMpipe will be able to automatically extract metadata from the museum inventory onto the Commons, which would save time from a student worker --whose activity has been the focus of an outreach case study-- who has been doing this work under the supervision of UG Wikimedia in Brazil members.
Decreasing the gender gap on the web
After completing the national phase of Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 contest, organized by the Wiki Education Brazil group, we were happy to announce the list of winners and also to collaborate with the international team by elaborating the profile of the first three winning prizes photographers for a blogpost. The photographer Gastão Guedes, winner of the first place in the national contest, was also an international highlight. His photograph of Palácio do Planalto took the seventh place in the international competition.
In order to expand the scope of the GLAM projects, Wiki Education Brazil group held partnership prospecting meetings with the Fundação Energia e Saneamento in São Paulo, in early November, and with the School of Museology from UNIRIO, a federal university localized in Rio de Janeiro city. The initial conversation with Fundação Energia e Saneamento revealed the team's interest in producing and improving articles on museum-related topics, what will be planned with Wiki Educação Group. With UNIRIO, the partnership was first discussed to be established with two initial study groups.
In December, we began the first activities related to the partnership with the School of Museology of UNIRIO. A calendar for the execution of the project was defined by the Wiki Educação Brasil, and three new articles were proposed to be created: Museu do Samba (Samba Museum), Musealização (Musealization) and Patrimonialização (Patrimonialisation). We also had the opportunity to help reviewing the proposed text for the article in Brazilian Portuguese about Zbyněk Zbyslav Stránský, a very important author of the Museology field. With the same thought in mind, we helped to improve the article about Waldisa Rússio, a very important Brazilian author and museologist.
Another activity that aimed to expand the content of museums on Wikipedia PT was carried out by students of the Museology course of ETEC Parque de Juventude, which under the guidance of Juliana Monteiro, GLAM Project Coordinator of Wiki Educação Brasil, produced texts and submitted photographs on Wikimedia Commons. The content is about four Museums localized in the countryside of São Paulo State: Dom Pedro I and Dona Leopoldina Museum, in Pindamonhangaba city; Paulo Setúbal Historical Museum, in Tatuí city; Visconde de Mauá Museum, in Mogi das Cruzes city and Prudente de Morais Museum, in Piracicaba city. All texts, with exception of Museum Prudente de Moraes, were written on user test pages and received comments from more experienced editors. The expectation is to publish the improved texts in the first three months of 2017. In November, we also started to explore the possibilities of registering information about Brazilian museums in Wikidata. In this sense, we completed the registration of the Pinacoteca of the State of São Paulo, the Museum of the Brazilian House, the Afro Brasil Museum and the Casa de Portinari Museum.
Throughout the month of November, the Wiki Education Brazil group has also dedicated itself to an important international partnership between Wikimedia and BBC World: the BBC 100 Women edit-a-thon. Held on December 8 the event was part of the fourth edition of the BBC 100 Women series, which annually elects the world's 100 most inspiring and influential women. For the first time Brazil took part and the women involved with Wiki projects in the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro could organize and participate of the event. And, in addition to the official BBC list, Wiki Education Brazil GLAM team listed over fifty names of women working in the area of historical and cultural heritage, due the fact that these areas have a lot of women working but barely recognized. At the end, the edit-a-thon gathered 17 participants who translated 13 entries, improved eight and created 20. Juliana Monteiro, GLAM coordinator project of Wiki Education Brazil group, also could give an interview about this important event in favor of decreasing the gender gap on the web.
In December, we also conducted research on authors and works entering the public domain in 2017. With the data collected, we prepared posts for our social networks in commemoration of Public Domain Day, disseminating material available on the works and authors in the Commons.
Heading for #1Lib1Ref 2017
Preparing next #1Lib1Ref
Scheduled from January 15 to February 3, the #Lib1Ref (One Librarian, One Reference) campaign will drive librarians towards Wikipedia. In view of that, a set of activities will be run during that period in Côte d'Ivoire by WCUG-CI.
In order to prepare the upcoming activities, several librarians of the BSF (Librarians Without Borders) network were met. Running an edit-a-thon with a group of during the January-February was the central matter during discussions. It was also an occasion to picture beautiful landscapes.
Exhibition photography; WikiLibrary Barcamp
Exhibition photography
In December I got permission to take photos in two art exhibitions in Cologne:
1. Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud: "Von Dürer bis van Gogh - Sammlung Bührle trifft Wallraf". Objects from Foundation E.G. Bührle, Zürich, are presented together with objects from Museum Wallraf as thematic couple/triple.
2. City museum of Cologne: "Drunter und Drüber - Der Heumarkt". An exhibiton about one of the biggest squares in Cologne, the "Heumarkt".
A very special surprise was to see that two of my own photos from Cologne, first published on Wikimedia Commons, are now part of this exhibition:
WikiLibrary Barcamp
On 3rd of December the first WikiLibrary Barcamp in Germany took place. About 60 librarians and Wikipedians gathered for a day at the Staatsbibliothek Dresden, better known as SLUB, in more than 2o sessions. The aim was to learn from each other how to benefit better in cooperation. The outcomes are considered to be fruitful, thanks to the intense support from our partners, the SLUB and the German librarian network. We are now planning a new barcamp on libraries and the net communities for 2017. Please let us know if you like to join us with ideas and folks.
Libraries of 1602 and 2016, science museum new home for wikimedians
La Città del Sole, a manuscript from 1602
On December 6th, at the City Library of Trento, the digitization of manuscript BCT1-1538, the oldest example of The City of the Sun by Tommaso Campanella, was presented. The manuscript, uploaded to Commons and Wikisource thanks to the collaboration between the library and Wikimedia Italia, was entirely transcribed and formatted during the contest held in occasion of Wikisource thirteenth birthday.
AIB Studi
In the 3rd issue, 2016 of AIB Studi the article Là ci darem la mano... Wikipedia e le biblioteche (in Italian) by Lucia Sardo was published. The paper dealt with the contribution of libraries and librarians to the GLAM project and Wikipedia. AIB Studi is an open-access journal on library and information science.
Wikimedia Italia @ MUSE
On December 10th the MUSE - Science Museum of Trento hosted the second annual assembly of WMI. In Spring 2016, MUSE hosted a Wikipedian in Residence dedicated to a GLAM project with several objectives, including the release of high-resolution images to Commons.
Colouring book with illustrations from ancient books
Image donation Specilla circularia; Glass negatives by photographer Jan Goedeljee; Pattypan training for GLAMs; 1300 historical images from the Peace Palace Library
Image donation Specilla circularia
The national library of the Netherlands recently acquired the Specilla circularia, a thought to be lost text on telescopes and lenses by Johannes Hudde from 1656. To make it more visible and reusable scans of this text were donated to Wikimedia Commons and integrated into the Dutch, English, Catalan, German, French and Russian articles on Hudde.
Glass negatives by early photographer Jan Goedeljee now on Commons
Jan Goedeljee (1824-1905) was a Dutch photographer working in his hometown Leiden and its surroundings. Erfgoed Leiden en Omstreken, the Leiden municipal archive, holds a large collection of glass negatives, which has been digitised and made available for re-use on Wikimedia Commons. The collection includes photos of many well-known places in Leiden, such as the Academy Building and the Hortus Botanicus, and of buildings that have since disappeared, such as the old post office and railway station. The upload was done by Erik Zachte, using Pattypan and a custom script for the conversion of the metadata. Access the collection here.
Pattypan training for GLAMs
On 19 December, WMNL organised a training for GLAM-employees on how to use the new uploadtool Pattypan. The training focused on how the tool works, the metadata standards that are used on Commons, and some wiki-syntax that is widely used on Commons. The training included a practical part during which some of the attendants made their first upload using Pattypan. The training was attended by 11 people from 8 different GLAM institutions. The slideshow of the training can be found here (in Dutch only). This training is part of a series of workshops that WMNL organises to increase (technical) expertise in its pool of volunteers and GLAM-partners; an earlier training on Pattypan was geared toward Wikimedia community members.
1300 historical images from the Peace Palace Library described in detail
In 2014 the Peace Palace Library in The Hague donated some 2000 high resolution photographs of prints to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from their historical book collection on history, war, peace, international law, geography, related novels and even some poetry. As of now, 31% of these images are being used on Wikipedia pages, which garnered about 73 million page views since May 2014. Unfortunately, although the bibliographic references were in order for each image, some 1500 images lacked a specific description and categorisation so that they could not be retrieved by subject matter. In the past year this imperfection has been largely remedied for around 1300 images, and many unknown pictures have been identified, but still precise metadata is lacking for some prints from a few books. The reader is kindly invited to the Category link given above to help. Some examples of prints with recent descriptions:

Pinazo Year Edit-a-thon
The National Museum of Ceramics and Decorative Arts "González Martí", located in Valencia, is a museum dedicated to ceramics (with special importance to Valencian ceramics), porcelains and other decorative arts such as textile art, traditional costumes and furniture. Housed in the Palace of the Marqués de Dos Aguas, it was founded on 7 February 1947, from the donation of Manuel González Martí’s ceramics collection. Seven years later, once the restoration of the palace was completed, the museum opened to the public on 18 June 1954. In 1969 the museum increased its collection with numerous pieces of furniture, clothing and paintings with special interest in Valencian tradition and local artists.
Pinazo Year
In 2016, on the occasion of the centenary of the death of the Valencian painter Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench (1849-1916), various commemorative events took place, such as a double exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Valencia and the Bancaja Foundation focused in history and portraiture in the work of the painter. Therefore, as part of this Pinazo Year, we carried out, together with the Museum, an edit-a-thon to generate content around the figure of the Valencian painter and the museum.
Edit-a-thon
The event took place on 17 December 2016 at the Museum, between 10 and 17 hours uninterruptedly. The dissemination was carried out through a press release and social networks and the inscription of the participants was managed by Wikimedia España (WMES) thanks to an online form. Also, a page on Wikipedia was created. Both the list of articles proposed and bibliography, as reliable sources, were provided by the Museum. Although the statistics will be active for a month, so far 10 articles have been edited by 10 participants, some of them new users.
Connected Open Heritage images
1284 images uploaded from the Sigvald Linné 1930ies archeological expeditions in Teotihuacan, Mexico
As a part of the Connected Open Heritage project we've initiated a cooperation with the National Museums of World Cultures in Sweden. The first batchupload of two planned did bring 1315[1] 1284 high-resolution images onto Commons. We're very happy to see that several of the images has already come to use thanks to Léna who created a nice gallery and added to the French and English Wikipedia articles about Teotihuacan! Part of that story is also the Twitterbot that André Costa quickly set up in a sudden burst of inspiration that posts example images as they go up from here. The collection includes many images of the famous pyramids and temples of the area, but also many examples of Precolumbian art that Sigvald Linné, who lead the expedition, published several articles and books about wich awarded him several awards and make him still relevant. The images from the batchupload can be found here.

World Wide Wikipedia comes to en end
The two day tour to Malmö December 1-2 marked the end of the World Wide Wikipedia project hosted by Riksutställningar and Riksantikvarieämbetet. The 13 participants there made the total of the four workshops go up to 46 and for the presentations the number of participants during the year ended up at almost 100. The idea of having one day with presentations aimed at managers and one day with a workshop with the goal of getting curators and subject matter experts to start editing articles and uploading images has worked out well as both the management level and the people actually doing the editing get the information and skillset needed to prioritize the work and to also start working. As always the problem is to keep prioritizing and put in the required time afterwords, but by reaching out not only to either managers or editors our hope is that sharing knowledge and material through the Wikimedia projects stays in focus.
Gender Equality, Visiting Scholars and Image uploads
Wales Report
The big news this month in Wales is that cy Wicipedia has become the first gender neutral Wikipedia in the world! This is an amazing achievement thanks to a combination of years of hard work by WMUK staff and the hard work of many volunteers. As part of the drive towards gender neutrality we held a BBC 100 Wiki Women event in Cardiff on the 8th, which was a huge success, with lots of new articles created and plenty of media coverage.
At the National Library of Wales a Wikipedia Visiting Scholar was appointed. User:Elintomos will be working to translate good English articles about notable Welsh women into Welsh using the Content Translator. Work also continues to upload images from the Library's collections and articles containing Library images have now been viewed 183 million times since the residency was launched two years ago. Also in December were lots of discussions with potential partners about some exciting collaborations for the future and hopefully we will be able to share some more good news soon.
BBC 100 Women 2016
The BBC held an edit-a-thon at their London offices, on 8 December 2016. News coverage here: Season ends with record breaking Wikipedia edit
Oxford
The Wikimedian In Residence at the University of Oxford has been arranging eight different training events for the coming year, from lunchtime drop-in sessions to half-day workshops. Nearly twenty research projects have responded to a call for partners. As we explore possibilities of co-working, some projects are at too early a stage to have outputs worth sharing, but others have large amounts of data that they are willing to share. A new Wikidata property, Electronic Enlightenment ID, has been created to enable an iniital bulk sharing of around 10,000 records from this database.
USA edit-a-thons
Washington DC edit-a-thon activities
Andrew Lih led an edit-a-thon and training for staff and volunteers at the US Holocaust Memorial and Museum, in Washington, D.C. He also talked about tools to analyze article quality, and article views in a wikiproject. He also discussed how to incorporate material in the Museum collections in wikipedia. Articles were improved.
Wikimedia District of Columbia participated in the global BBC 100 Women event in two locations. Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight led an edit-a-thon at the BBC offices in Washington, D.C. She trained staff and volunteers in editing, and Women in Red work lists. Robert Fernandez facilitated the event at the BBC offices in Miami. There was a hashtag #100womenwiki. There was news coverage by the BBC - As it happened: Wikipedia edit-a-thon; We are hosting a Wikipedia edit-a-thon. BBC World News
- Wikimedia DC Annual Membership Meeting
Wikimedia DC held its annual meeting on 12 December 2016. Past and future activities were discussed. Also cake.
New York City activities
Wikimedia New York City wrapped up its busiest year ever with 52 events. We look forward to more great events in 2017!
- On Thursday, December 1, 2016, WM NYC facilitated a Grey Literature Edit-a-thon @ New York Academy of Medicine. Grey literature are materials and research produced by organizations outside of the traditional commercial or academic publishing and distribution channels. The event followed the Eighteenth International Conference on Grey Literature scheduled for November 28-29 also held at the New York Academy of Medicine.
- On Saturday, December 3, 2016, as part of part of Wikipedia Asian Month, WM NYC facilitated a Contemporary Chinese Art Edit-a-thon @ Guggenheim, where editors were given complimentary tickets to tour the exhibition Tales of Our Time after the editing session. A great, fruitful event that is part of the long-term efforts of the Guggenheim to partner with Wikipedia!
- In what might be a first, on Sunday, December 11, 2016, WM NYC participated in what is believed to be its first ever edit-a-thon in a record store, Wild Facts: Women In Avant-Garde Music @ CommendNYC. CommendNYC is an electronica music store. The day long event included a performance by musician Christina Vantzou.
- And, as a nice way to end the year's events on Wednesday, December 21, 2016, WM NYC held its last event of 2016, WikiWednesday (December) @ Babycastles. This is the last event at the 14th Street location of Babycastles, with info as to its new location to come. We have been very happy with the partnership with Babycastles, a co-working space and gallery. This WikiWednesday had a full house with many sweet and savory pies from Stolle. Thanks to all who came and participated in the event!
Other noteworthy news
- Wikimedia New York City would like to welcome our first paid support, Joelle Fleurantin, who will work 10 hours per week. We are very excited and happy to start this new partnership! Welcome, Joelle!
- At the December WikiWednesday, Yurik demoed his structured data project where interactive data would come from Tabular Data uploaded to Commons with a CC0 license. This project, as well as the Map Data project, would enable Wikipedia entries to have more responsive and data visualization design. The other benefit of this work is that they are very suited to many language Wikipedias, as the data is meant to be language-inclusive. Very exciting work that energized the attendees at WikiWednesday NYC. Thanks, Yuri!
- As a year ends and WM NYC looks to the future, we plan on implementing the wonderful Outreach Dashboard as a way to capture metrics and reduce the administrative burden on managing user data for events. Pharos and Lane Rasberry have been providing steady support to the project, and BrillLyle aka Erika will be working to initiate the campaign feature for upcoming events in 2017. The chapter is very hopeful and excited about the Outreach Dashboard and is happy to work with Sage Ross from WikiEdu on this project. If you are interested in further upcoming development plans Sage is working on to support this work, please see this AgileVentures grant!
AfroCROWD activities and outreach

Russian PhD Comics video; WMF grant to cover APC; Fluorescent fish
Russian version of the PhD Comics video on Open Access
For Open Access Week 2012, Jorge Cham of PhD Comics had produced a video about open access on the basis of English sound bites. A new version of this video has now been uploaded with a Russian audio track, neatly keeping with the original pace and style. Its is now being used in the Russian Wikipedia's article on Open Access, ru:Открытый доступ. The audio for this file was recorded by students of PetrSU during the course "Internet Mathematics".
An article about Wikipedia in the class room was published Open Access
A scholarly article ("Why Medical Schools Should Embrace Wikipedia") that had been published in a non-open journal was made open access by way of a dedicated grant from the Wikimedia Foundation, which paid for the article processing charge.
Recent uploads: Fluorescent fish
A series of images of fluorescent fish have been extracted from two composite images, themselves imported to Commons from an Open Access article. While the composite images illustrate articles around fluorescence and biofluorescence in a number of languages, the individual images have begun to illustrate articles about the fish species (yes, even the encircled one is a fish). The Open Access Media Importer was not active this month, as its workflows were being reviewed.

Structured Data on Commons Funded! #1lib1ref and a holiday break
Preparing for #1lib1ref
Mid-January launches the #1lib1ref campaign, in over 12 languages and contexts: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref
This year, we are also making a few tweaks to the campaign strategy:
- We added a page for small "Coffee hour" get togethers, to encourage folks to organize a small social activity with librarians.
- We added more international support, from various language communities, by deliberately engaging chapters and community organizers
- We are going to be testing a central-notice banner. Look for posts on GLAM-Wiki Global and the Wikipedia + Libraries Facebook groups for help translating.
If you want to help with #1lib1ref is still not too late! We can still translate and engage more communities in the campaign, or share it with library networks!
Structured Data on Commons: Funded!
One of the greatest difficulties and challenges for GLAMs to work with the Wikimedia community, has been the inconsistent and hard to evaluate usages of GLAM content once its on. The long discussed opportunity for integrating the Wikidata software, Wikibase into Commons to allow for better structured metadata for media is finally upon us!
The WMF and WMDE announced funding for work on Structured data on Commons via a grant from the en:Sloan Foundation. You can find the announcement at the Wikimedia blog. More information about the grant is at Commons:Structured data/Sloan Grant. If you have questions, please join us at the Structured Data on Commons talk page.
Alex will be leading up community engagement during the first few months of the project, while the grant monies allow for hiring a Community Liason and additional GLAM-Wiki Staff to support the project. Please join in supporting the project where you can, and let us know where you can help .
