Switching from PHP to Zope/Python
Now here’s an interesting discussion on kuro5hin.org I’ve always wanted to look at Zope, as it’s based on Python I thought it’d offer me lovely OO programming and fast development. Reading some of the comments here I have to wonder, especially in light of Russell’s rant about the complexity of Java. (Picked up by Keith who might be a deceptive right-wing troll but he writes some good techie stuff!) But then I think there’s room for both types – pure computer scientists who will most likely drive future ideas, and those that get the job done in the real world.

It looks like iTools 7 for Mac OS X & Mac OS X Server is using or at least shipping b2++ as one of their “new extentsions to make websites easier”. It sits alongside such well-known stalwarts as Gallery and phpBB2 and PHP-Nuke! (Thanks Mark for the link!)

Comreg Survey "Do You Want Cheaper and Better Quality Broadband In Ireland?"
Go on and fill out this survey before April 21st! I wonder what do they expect people to answer? “No!” I’d put this in the humour section except that Blarney hasn’t got broadband yet so it’s no joke to me! More on boards.ie and thanks to Stewie @ #linux for the link. Later… It seems that it’s specifically for wholesale sellers of broadband. It may not help the cause much if they get a lot of replies from the small guys, no matter how strongly we feel on the subject!

GHOST TOWN
While slashdot, the world and his dog have already seen this story I only looked through it this morning. It’s a photo-essay following several journies into the Dead Zone around Chernobyl. Aide Roche publicizes the plight of the people in that area through her charity work here in Cork and elsewhere but to see such personal photographic evidence brings it to another level again.. All the lives ruined and changed and memories left behind. It’s very sad.

This bookmarklet looks interesting. The Passivator is described as, “A passive verb and adverb flagger for Mozilla-derived browsers, Safari, and Opera 7.5, with caveats.” Running it on my this page shows a disturbing number of blue and yellow boxes, but reading over the highlighted text again is enlightening. You know it’s election time again. Politicians are being nice and taking notice of their constituants. Not that I mind, much. Things get done. It’s a pity I’m moving to a completely different area as this gesture is wasted on me! Several weeks ago a letter arrived at home saying the road outside would be resurfaced. Although the letter was written by a local councillor, it was at pains to point out that it was a cross-party effort that resulted in the action taken! Two days ago preperations began on the road.
