South Texas Botanical Gardens & Nature Center invites the public to celebrate H-E-B’s Texas Recycles Day, November 15, 16 & 17. To qualify, each visitor who brings a plastic bottle or single-use plastic bag from any retailer receives FREE ADMISSION that day to the Botanical Gardens, normally a $10 value for adults! Enjoy the Gardens in Fall bloom and learn how H-E-B has recycled 50 million pounds of plastic bags since 2004!
Ocean Drive Garden Club partners with Gardens for 4th HAY MAZE, opening Saturday, October 19! Geared to children, 120 bales of hay builds a maze challenging young sense of direction, as they wind their way through, searching for the Exit. This “hay-mazing adventure”, located near Yellow Treehouse, is open 9 am-6 pm, celebrating fall, changing to Holiday theme after Halloween!
Four weekends of lights, trees, hay rides, s’mores & cocoa & SANTA beginning the day after Thanksgiving features a huge fresh-cut lighted fir tree, and “Emerald Forest”– an 18 foot lighted tree of green plastic bottles plus four smaller ones created by environmental artist Shelia Rogers! More than 500 guests dressed in colorful Hawaiian dresses and shirts enjoyed the Botanical Gardens tropical collections, food samplings from nine restaurants, signature Blue Hawaiians, a butterfly release, silent auction, “Aloha Dave & the Tourists” and hula dancing with the “Pacific Islanders,” Friday, October 4, at MOONLIGHT LUAU in the GARDENS! The 16 annual signature fundraiser drew veteran Moonlighters, first-timers, VIPs, candidates, plus corporate and personal sponsors. CITGO was Presenting Sponsor for the 10th year. PRIVATE ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS—parrots back! PRIVATE ENCOUNTERS now for longer time periods, either parrots or reptiles! Small groups can enjoy fun interactions with either THREE parrots or THREE reptiles (USDA regulations), with guests holding each animal, giving them snacks, taking photos in private setting. A great party, birthday, anniversary, or friend treat! Fees go to our Veterinary Fund!
For your convenience, we’re providing a schedule of SATURDAY MORNING Horticulture & Environmental Education classes! All begin at 9:30 am, Education Station classroom, with spaced seating for 40. In a unique fusion off art, community and nature, students in Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s Sculpture I class, led by Graduate Instructor Ian Manseau, created unique wild life metal sculptures combining zootomy, wire sculpting, metal cutting and welding techniques for exhibit at South Texas Botanical Gardens, which sees real wildlife on a regular basis.
Guests visiting Saturdays or Sundays are treated to REP-TALES,10:30 am, on the lawn area. “Kids” of all ages learn relationships between resident reptiles and adapted reptiles we’ve accepted as rescues. Never touched an Iguana? Now’s your chance! If you child isn’t shy, you won’t be either!
