Man slashed in the neck near Astor Place Cube by random attacker: ‘Just exploded out of nowhere’

A 30-year-old man was randomly slashed in the neck near the Astor Place Cube Thursday afternoon – and the attacker is still at large.

The victim was cut in the back of the neck at Lafayette Square and Cooper Avenue around 5:22 p.m. Thursday, police said.

He was taken to the hospital via EMS services, and was in stable condition.

The suspect is a man wearing a tan jacket and black gloves with a blue shirt and blue jeans, who fled eastbound toward St. Marks Place, police added.

As of Friday morning, the suspect was still at large.

Witnesses said the slashing came completely out of the blue.

“Right before, nothing. Yeah, no altercation. Just exploded out of nowhere,” witness Michael Picardi told ABC7.

“Normal. People having food inside, literally 30 seconds turn around, heard a commotion. Gentleman was on the floor holding his neck, blood everywhere. Hunched over. Shirtless. Holding the back of his neck. Very big pool of blood,” he added.

Firefighters eventually came by to hose down the sidewalk, a witness said. WABC

The victim took his own shirt off the stem of the blood that was gushing from the grisly wound, Picardi said.

After the victim was transported to the hospital, the FDNY came by to hose any evidence off the sidewalk.
