For many, seafaring is more than a career—it’s a calling shaped by family legacy, the excitement of travel, and a strong sense of purpose. Yet, challenges persist, such as limited sea-time opportunities and an oversupply in cadet training programs. With only about 5,000 out of 35,000 cadets in the Philippines securing roles, the discussion turned to how stronger collaboration between ship management companies and local training bodies can address these employment gaps and ensure quality training. Diversity and inclusion emerged as vital themes, with cadets advocating for broader acceptance of women and LGBTQ+ seafarers. “The maritime industry must open doors wider to all identities,” shared one cadet, highlighting hopes for a truly inclusive culture led by supportive shipowners and companies. Digitalization was recognized as a powerful tool for learning, connection, and sharing life at sea. Cadets noted how influencers and online communities are reshaping perspectives and enabling valuable connections with family and friends. The celebrations began on October 24 with a Rangoli and Painting Competition, reflecting Diwali’s spirit through colorful displays. On October 25, a traditional pooja filled the space with peaceful mantras, underscoring themes of gratitude and enlightenment. Festivities included a Bollywood quiz, singing, dance performances, and poem recitations, adding energy and joy. In collaboration with the NGO Sanskar Nirmaan, OSM Thome shared sweets and stationery with children, who gifted handmade Diwali cards—a touching reminder of the festival’s essence. The celebration concluded with a lunch of traditional sweets, fostering unity and togetherness.
