🌊 It's Week 3 of #PlasticFreeJuly, and today B'ZEOS is looking back on the #Plastisea Project! The consortium coordinated by SINTEF Industry, brought together research institutes, universities, and B'ZEOS to: 👉Utilize sustainably cultivated brown seaweed to validate material development. 👉Analyze the entire value chain, from raw material to the end-of-life, to ensure sustainability from start to finish. 👉Conduct a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for B'ZEOS seaweed-based materials. As a result of the project, our team worked hands-on with experts across the value chain, including seaweed specialists, material scientists, and research institutes, to validate our innovative technology. 🔬 Science, R+D, and sustainability drive the core of what we do at B'ZEOS. 🌱 📦 B'ZEOS had a fantastic time at the Swiss Food & Nutrition Valley event "Imagining the Packaging of the Future" in #Bern this week 🇨🇭 ! Hosted by Nestlé and Tetra Pak, the day was filled with insightful seminars centered on sustainable packaging. 💡 We heard from McKinsey & Company about trends and consumer insights, Keller and Heckman LLP on the policy and regulatory environment, and had the opportunity to share insights on our #seaweed-based packaging! Here are some highlights: 🌱 Grows 30-60x times faster than land-based crops. 🌱Acts as a natural #carbonsink, absorbing up to 17 million tons of carbon each year. 🌱Does not require finite resources such as land and freshwater to grow, avoiding competition with #food production. By harnessing the regenerative powers of seaweed, B'ZEOS is driving innovation to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs) by providing jobs for coastal communities, reducing pollution, enabling secure food systems, and protecting the oceans. 🚨 #Plastic pellets, commonly referred to as #nurdles, are the third largest source of #microplastic pollution globally, with over 445,000 tonnes leaking into the environment, and this amount is on track to exponentially increase! The European Parliament has adopted a new proposal for a #regulation aimed at preventing pellet losses. 👉 Applies to businesses handling over 1,000 tonnes of plastic pellets annually (Packaging Insights). 👉 SMEs have lighter requirements. 👉 Implementations include monitoring, staff training, risk assessment, and accountability. While the regulation marks a significant step towards mitigating microplastic pollution, it's crucial for policy makers to integrate #bioplastics into the conversation and differentiate various feedstocks, as not all bioplastics are created equal Innovation Alliance for a Global Plastics Treaty. 👇 We'd love to hear your thoughts below.
