It's often said that you can't pick your parents. In plant breeding, that's actually what it's all about. Our breeding program @Yelloway is unique in several ways; one of which is the population we select from. Another is the selection procedure. Learn from our Yelloway head of breeding, Fernando A. García-Bastidas why this is important and how it's done. Stay tuned for the next update, where we'll continue with more information about the pollination process Video courtesy of 🎥 Fernando A. Over ons
Yelloway is a science and innovation partnership between Chiquita, Keygene and MusaRadix. Yelloway’s vision is a genetically diverse export banana industry. Our objective is the continuous development of the banana crop to counter current and future challenges and unlock new opportunities. Yelloway is a natural, conventional breeding program for bananas supported by the latest technology. The initial focus of breeding is to develop bananas resistant to TR4 and black sigatoka.

Let's take a closer look at how banana breeding starts in practice together with Fernando A. García-Bastidas Head of the Banana breeding program at #Yelloway. "Today, the 10th of July 2024, we are ready for the next crossing round, this time using our newly improved hybrid resistant parents. For this, we need flowers but, how do we know the flower is coming? As every genotype has its own time, it's very difficult to predict. There are, however, certain signs that indicate this. The flower can be expected shortly after the last two leaves are shorter than the previous ones, like you can see in the video" Video courtesy of 🎥 Fernando A. A little taste of the Banana diversity at Yelloway in the KeyGene ‘s Breeding Station - Bemmel. Im always amazed by the bluish tone of the fruits and the vibrant purple/red? of those magnificent bracts in this accession. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do. Good news is that we are making this and many more resistant to #Fusarium TR4 and Black Sigatoka. #diversityisthefuture #bananabreeding

Just another Monday at the Yelloway Greenhouse. Take a closer look at some of the beautiful variety of banana blossoms, including the well known and beloved Cavendish, and some wild relatives. A banana has both male and female flowers; the male flower at the bottom center, surrounded by the smaller female flowers, which can later turn into bananas. #Bananaflowers are arranged in clusters of a complex structure, an inflorescence botanically known as #thyrse #Yelloway #diversity #bananaflowers

Yelloway congratulates it's partner, Professor Gert HJ Kema for being rewarded with the 2024 KNPV-prize for his special contribution to phytopathology in particular and crop protection in general. The KNPV Prize is awarded by the KNPV Plantenziektekundige Vereniging (translated: Royal Dutch Plant Protection Association) to a person who has made a special contribution to the development of resilient crops in the Netherlands. Professor Kema is praised for his "visible and enterprising research into sustainable crop protection". The jury report states (translated) : “Prof. Dr. Ir. Ing. G.H.J. (Gert) Kema is a man with vision, passion and entrepreneurial spirit. He inspires people who are active in research and/or practice. He gives society great visibility of crop protection research through interviews on radio and TV and in newspapers and through popular science publications at home and abroad. He has set up many large international research projects together with the (inter)national business community. This is with the aim of generating impact for sustainable crop protection. A unique spin-off from these projects are the new Dutch banana breeding companies. During his long career, Gert Kema has made an exceptional commitment to scientific research and education in crop protection. He first worked on Septoria leaf spot disease in grains and from 2010 on crop-threatening fungal diseases of the banana. His research has been recorded in 120 scientific publications. Since 2018, Gert Kema has led the Phytopathology department at Wageningen University & Research and in that capacity has trained many students and supervised many PhD candidates. By awarding the KNPV Prize 2024, the jury wants to crown Kema's long and fruitful career in phytopathology in particular and crop protection in general.” Source: https://lnkd.in/eXGnNt2A #KNVP-Prijs #Yelloway #MusaRadix #Keygene #WUR #Congratulations

At Yelloway we are conventionally breeding bananas with the help of state of the art technology, in order to achieve our goal of breeding more resistant and sustainable bananas 🍌. As you can see from this short video from Fernando A. García-Bastidas, the actual pollination to create crosses is done manually. Often the pollination can only be done in a very limited timeframe, and since it's a natural process, it's not something that can be planned exact and therefore it requires the team to be flexible .
Banana pollination! Just one of the steps to make stronger and more sustainable bananas.

Earth day 2024 🌍 The perfect moment to look back at what #Yelloway has accomplished in the past years and look forward with confidence on achieving our goals to breed disease resistant bananas, with a lower carbon footprint. Yelloway - has successfully established a greenhouse that meets our unique requirements - has been successful in growing more than 1,000 banana plants representing over 150 types of bananas among cultivated and wild relatives - has sequenced and assembled the genome of several types of banana plants - is now capable of classifying, understanding, and selecting the best parents - has developed additional molecular tools for breeding thanks to DNA technology, including: Molecular markers to facilitate breeding, identification of potential genes of interest, and new protocols for disease-testing for Black Sigatoka and Fusarium TR4 - made a range of unique crosses, which allowed us to develop improved parents with different traits such as resistance - selected the offspring that will find their way into the field-trials throughout 2024 Together, the Yelloway partners Chiquita, KeyGene and MusaRadix want to be a driving force in creating a more sustainable and diverse banana industry. Happy Earth day!” #Earthday #Bananas #Chiquita #KeyGene #MusaRadix

Did you know that there are more than 1000 different types of edible banana 🍌 , but we use only a few of them? It's a great opportunity for more diversity, don't you agree? Diversity is the future! This is a repost from Yelloway's head of breeding Fernando A. García-Bastidas's (aka DrBanana) Instagram account, with some awesome footage he shot in the Yelloway greenhouse. #bananas #diversity #future

"Things in the banana industry need to change". #Yelloway's vision, in the words of head of breeding Fernando A. García-Bastidas. In the #Yelloway #greenhouse in #TheNetherlands over 150 banana varieties - including a growing number of unique crosses 🌱 - are the foundation of a more #diverse, #resilient and more #sustainable future of the banana crop. #greenhouse #Yelloway #Chiquita #Keygene #MusaRadix #futureofbananas
