Welcome to small US city of #Townsend, Tennessee. It advertises itself as the “Quiet Side of the #Smokies” (aka the Great Smoky Mountains National Park), but it’s really the bike-friendly side. That’s smart, as this is the closest town to the park’s Cades Cove area. Cades Cove has a scenic loop road that the National Park Service closes to motorists every Wednesday in the summer. So, many people who stay here planning to #bike in Cades Cove end up #cycling to shopping and dining in Townsend, as well. Cycling can benefit #cities large and small. https://lnkd.in/ecmha-Gg

In the US state of #NorthCarolina, the NCDOT and Federal Highway Administration are building a massive interchange linking a circumferential highway around the city of Raleigh with Interstate 40 and another expressway. It’s part of a project running into the billions of US dollars that is financed largely through borrowing (https://lnkd.in/enjTN4MH) This is how the project compares to central #Paris, where far more people are on the move each day relative to Raleigh. Yet, plenty of space remains for #housing, commercial #realestate, #museums, and venues for special events— like the #Olympics. Which would you rather have? A vast interchange or a vibrant world city?

🚴🏻♀️“Anyone can ride a #bike. It can be used as a means of commuting to #work or #school. Or getting fresh air or boosting some endorphins. Or just experiencing the sheer joy that only riding on two wheels can give a human being. But in the United States, where in many #cities cars are given priority over people, the thought of riding a bike on a road might make some recoil in fear. In the States, #cycling is still on training wheels.”🚳🫤 Perhaps this will soon change, thanks to the example of Kristen Faulkner and her spectacular ride.🥇👏🥳 It’s a good thing that the City of New York made Central Park more bike-friendly years ago, as that is said to be where she got seriously into cycling. A gold medal from the #ParisOlympics is a lot better than a bunch of speeding taxis using the park as a cut-through, don’t you think? ⛔️🚕💨👍 https://lnkd.in/egayaNYJ

🚲⚡️#Ebikes are the #autoindustry’s Kryptonite 🦸♂️
In a new study of travel mode patterns in the Jiading district of Shanghai, Ailing Yin, Xiaohong Chen, Frauke Behrendt, Andrew Morris, and Xiang Liu find that e-bikes can contribute to “a significant reduction in car dependence.”

You don’t have to have to be on an #ebike to break the speed limit. You may have to be in great physical shape to do it, though. This is from the #bike road race today at the #ParisOlympics2024. Note the flash of the speed camera to the right. A commentator noted that the local municipality was going to have a lot of pictures to go through, as the camera was constantly flashing.

Locals and Expats living in the #Netherlands: can #Amsterdam still become more bicycle-friendly? 🤔 Perhaps you have an opinion. We invite you to join a 2 hour study excursion where we will argue: yes, and it’s happening right now. We will ride with you to sites in Amsterdam representing trends in bicycle planning research and practice, and you will see practical ways of how bicycle- and people-friendly design is made possible. A fun way to spend a Thursday or Saturday afternoon! 😊 Join us weekly in Amsterdam, in group sizes capped at 10, priced at €50 per person, with full information here: https://lnkd.in/eSdUW7ua We hope to see you there! Cycling can help to transform society. Check out our paper:
Traveling from A to B is not wasted time. It can foster competitiveness or community. Should we encourage people to travel 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞 or 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫? Check it out: https://lnkd.in/dhPvY8K with Anna Nikolaeva, Meredith Glaser, Morten Skou Nicolaisen & Carmen Chan, AICP

🏛️Beautiful architecture, 🛶 historic canals, and: 🚲𝐥𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 #𝐛𝐢𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐬 - 3 things you notice immediately upon arrival in #Amsterdam. Our suggestion to experience the latter, for those visiting in August: 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘺 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 that give visitors and locals a look into what is being done to make riding a bike more pleasant and more accessible. Led by researchers, you will get a special combination of unique site selection than the general Amsterdam bike tour and expert insight into the subject. You can join us every Thursday and Saturday afternoon, in group sizes capped at 10, for €50 per person. Full information here: https://lnkd.in/eSdUW7ua Image by Trey Hahn

#Tourism has gotten a reputation for being a burden on the #environment and #qualityoflife of the #cities most popular with visitors. But, what if tourists could be persuaded to behave in a more sustainable manner? For example , instead of driving or riding on a petroleum-fueled tour #bus, they could be induced via a discount to take advantage of #bikeshare and ride a #bike. #Copenhagen is giving such inducements a try. If it works, #Barcelona and other tourist centers where tourism pressures have triggered unrest should take note. https://lnkd.in/dzC8yEgB
Copenhagen's new 'CopenPay' scheme rewards tourists – but does it actually work?
