Vorige week stonden we met NEBUL op de World Summit AI en kwamen we onze Delftse vrienden van Team Epoch tegen. Zij ontwikkelen een AI-model dat malaria vroegtijdig detecteert in microscopische bloedbeelden. Het model identificeert malaria-parasieten in verschillende stadia. Hun modellen worden getraind op onze infrastructuur bij NEBUL. Met onze HPC-clusters kunnen ze grotere datasets gebruiken en het trainingsproces versnellen. Team Epoch neemt deel aan een competitie waar het model beoordeeld wordt op performance en snelheid. Een goed voorbeeld van een waardevolle AI use case! Team Epoch V was at the World Summit AI event in Amsterdam on October 9th and 10th! World Summit AI is the biggest event for AI and emerging tech, showcasing its uses, risks, and opportunities. It brings together top AI minds, leaders, and innovators to share the latest breakthroughs and insights, shaping the future of AI and its impact on the world. It was great to see our partner NEBUL also at World Summit AI. They power our operation by allowing us to access their computing clusters, so that we can get the most out of our AI model. One of the highlights for us was attending a talk by Professor Michele Vendruscolo of Cambridge University on the use of AI to predict the effects of organic compounds in dysfunctional proteins in the brain. He illustrated the ways in which models such as Google's AlphaFold can be used to combat neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. The first competition of Team Epoch V! Spotting the early stages of malaria parasites in blood samples is a challenge that can make the difference between life and death. Accurate and fast malaria diagnosis is crucial for saving lives, especially in areas heavily affected by the disease, like Africa. In this competition, organized by the Lacuna Fund, we are challenged to develop an AI model to classify malaria parasites in blood slide images. The dataset consists of annotated images of blood samples from Uganda and Ghana, so that the model is tailored to these blood types and reduces diagnostic and treatment biases. Traditionally, diagnosing malaria involves resource-intensive methods that also demand technical expertise. Automated AI-driven diagnostics can significantly reduce this burden. Improving ease and accuracy of the diagnostic, especially in resource-limited settings. This competition supports the goals of SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being by aiming to detect malaria at an early stage, providing timely diagnosis and treatment, and ultimately contributing to better health outcomes. 🇳🇱 TU Delft's Team Epoch | The Netherlands-Based AI Dream Team 🇳🇱 https://lnkd.in/emtazAfe "Of the 671 teams, team Epoch crept in third place soon before the end. Things got really exciting then, says Helwegen looking back. “Before the final result, the model was tested in a different database to the one that we had worked with.” Working closely with Team Epoch: NEBUL, NVIDIA and VAST Data provided the Netherlands based AI infrastructure needed at the end of the project, delivering the world’s fastest supercomputer, the NVIDIA DGX H100 Compute Cluster, needed to propel Team Epoch's results to the win over the 671 global competitors. This Netherlands Sovereign Supercomputing cluster was built by NEBUL, together with our partners NVIDIA and VAST to enable European organizations to provide AI solutions, while respecting European regulations, compliance and at the same time promoting technology leadership. But the real winner here is the world's oceans and ecosystems. While the sea kelp has been in a state of dramatic decline, it's now properly mapped and the right resources can be organized to slow the decline and reverse decline into growth, protecting the oceans wildlife which impacts the entire world in many positive ways. Last Friday, our team as well as the Eco-Runner Team Delft had the honor of receiving a delegation from the municipality of Rotterdam including Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb, as well as Vice-Rector Magnificus Prof.dr. Robert Mudde, who visited the Dream Hall to celebrate the collaborative efforts to establish the TU Delft Rotterdam campus. During their visit, we showcased several notable projects undertaken by Epoch, including a demonstration of our participation in a competition focused on early-stage Malaria detection in Uganda. A highlight was our discussion of a recent collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the National Archive to develop an AI model that streamlines the processing of ‘Open Government Act’ (WOO) requests. As government officials, Mr. Aboutaleb and his administration are obliged by the WOO to sift through extensive archives of digital and physical documents to fulfill information requests—a disproportionately time-consuming task. Our visitors were pleased to learn about how our AI solution helps alleviate this burden. Promoting human welfare through the application of AI is one of our primary goals, so receiving such positive feedback from people who are directly impacted by our work is incredibly meaningful for our team.

Op vrijdag 6 september bracht het College010 van burgemeester en wethouders van Rotterdam een informeel werkbezoek aan de TU Delft. Tijdens een gevarieerde rondleiding op de campus besprak het gezelschap actuele, grootstedelijke thema's en innovatieve oplossingen die bijdragen aan de toekomst van stad en regio. Het bezoek onderstreepte de warme banden tussen Rotterdam en de TU Delft en bood ook gelegenheid om de gezamenlijke inspanningen voor een duurzame, innovatieve toekomst te versterken, waaronder de gedeelde ambitie rond TU Delft | Rotterdam Campus. ⚡ De rondleiding ging van start bij het ESP-Lab, een uniek laboratorium waar het energienetwerk van de toekomst uitgedacht en getest wordt. Hier pluizen wetenschappers uit hoe je het elektriciteitsnet van de toekomst stabiel, betrouwbaar en groen houdt met behulp van heel veel data. 🌿 Vervolgens bezocht het gezelschap The Green Village , waar slimme oplossingen werden getoond om Nederland klimaatbestendig te maken en de energietransitie en circulaire economie een boost te geven. Dit fieldlab is bij uitstek dé plek om dergelijke innovaties te kunnen testen en demonstreren. Wetenschappers werken er onder andere aan de realisatie van de woonwijk van de toekomst en gaven bestuurders een inkijkje in de 24/7 Energy Hub, die bedoeld is om de energietransitie in stedelijke gebieden te versnellen. 🚙 De rondleiding eindigde in de TU Delft | Dream Hall waar burgemeester en wethouders in gesprek gingen met studenten van de Dream Teams Team Epoch en Eco-Runner Team Delft. De studenten lieten onder meer zien dat we in de toekomst met waterstofauto’s op de openbare weg kunnen rijden, en zoomden in op een toekomst vol mogelijkheden waarbij mensgerichte AI ingezet kan worden. 🥇 Tot slot vertelden ze meer over hoe studenten ieder jaar een compleet nieuw internationaal en interdisciplinair team oprichten om in competitieverband een technische innovatie op de kaart te zetten die bijdraagt aan een betere toekomst.
