In the Netherlands (or 'Holland') it's quite warm this week: some 28 oC. In KeyGene's banana breeding station in the village of Bemmel, it's always that warm! Here's a post by the joint Yelloway initiative (together with Chiquita and MusaRadix), in which KeyGene performs the breeding. In Yelloway, we develop banana varieties with resistance against TR4 Fusarium wilt (Panama disease) and Black Sigatoka.
It's often said that you can't pick your parents. In plant breeding, that's actually what it's all about. Our breeding program @Yelloway is unique in several ways; one of which is the population we select from. Another is the selection procedure. Learn from our Yelloway head of breeding, Fernando A. García-Bastidas why this is important and how it's done. Stay tuned for the next update, where we'll continue with more information about the pollination process Video courtesy of 🎥 Fernando A.
