✨ “AI Powered Organisation” event with INSEAD Alumni Association the Netherlands This Wednesday we had the pleasure of having a truly reflective and thought-provoking INEAD Alumni event on “The AI Powered Organisation” led by Stanford Professor Amir Goldberg. As professor of Organizational Behavior at Stanford Graduate School of Business and Co-Director of the Computational Culture Lab, Prof. Goldberg brought to the room an unparalleled depth of knowledge and practical insights on AI and its organizational impact. The event was kindly hosted by the wonderful team at &samhoud in their beautiful office at Oosterdokskade, Amsterdam. 🔍 What were the key takeaways the alumni had from Professor Goldberg’s session? Reframing Business Challenges as Prediction Problems: Prof. Goldberg emphasized that in order to harness the full potential of AI, business leaders and strategists should view every challenge as a prediction problem. This shift in perspective can drive significant value across industries. Understanding the Limitations of AI: He clarified that while LLMs and AI models can emulate human behavior, they fall short in reasoning capabilities, calling them “stochastic parrots.” This creates a clear division of roles: AI excels in making predictions, while humans bring judgment and nuanced decision-making. The AI-Driven Manager’s Playbook: 1. Set the right objectives and define what to predict 2. Identify the relevant data for training models 3. Analyze, interpret, and act on the data insights The evening was not just informative but also interactive, with an ongoing engaging Q&A session where attendees dived deeper into the complexities of AI and its impact on modern organizations. What an incredible evening we had last night at Oliver Wyman! Ruud Sondag, interviewed by Marco Kesteloo, shared his inspiring journey as the CEO of Schiphol Airport during a truly challenging 18 months. With over 80 alumni in attendance, it was a fantastic opportunity to hear firsthand how Ruud navigated the stormy waters of crisis management. As some of you may know, Schiphol faced major hurdles after the COVID-19 pandemic, including staffing shortages and operational breakdowns that created chaos for both passengers and staff. Ruud's approach to turning things around was both strategic and heartfelt, and he walked us through how he achieved success: 1. Harnessing Urgency in Crisis “The sense of urgency is already there. You don't have to create it.” Ruud used the immediate crisis as a powerful motivator for quick action. 2. Engaging Stakeholders “They start searching for people who are experienced in logistics or supply chain stuff.” He reached out to experts and fostered collaboration to tackle the airport's challenges. 3. Prioritizing Employee Well-being “We’re here to help people.” Ruud focused on improving working conditions and morale, which enhanced the overall passenger experience. 4. Focusing on Process Optimization “We really went into every detail of what the process looks like?” He analyzed operations closely to identify inefficiencies and streamline processes. 5. Balancing Operations with Community Needs “Can you do something around that hub, protecting the hub, but still also take into account the interest of people living there?” Ruud balanced airport needs with community concerns, implementing noise reduction measures to maintain good relations. Ruud’s journey is a testament to the power of effective leadership and a genuine commitment to people, both employees and the community. Commit to ongoing allyship: Don’t let your support be a one-time effort. Look for opportunities to consistently advocate for those in underrepresented groups. Speak up, offer support, and be present over the long term. 2. Create safe spaces for others: Ensure people in your workplace feel safe to express their true selves. Encourage open dialogue, actively listen, and check in with colleagues to understand their experiences and concerns. 3. Be a vulnerable leader: If you’re in a leadership role, don’t be afraid to admit what you don’t know. Show a willingness to learn, listen to diverse voices, and make inclusive leadership part of your everyday approach. 4. Turn diversity goals into action: Make DEI initiatives part of your company’s core strategy. Implement programs like reverse mentoring or employee resource groups, and measure your progress with real outcomes, not just numbers. 5. Collaborate with external communities: Partner with local organizations and global initiatives to expand your DEI efforts. Engage with external communities to amplify your impact and drive meaningful, long-lasting change. A big thank you to everyone who joined us this week at Van Lanschot Kempen in Amsterdam for our event, “Prinsjesdag Approaching: The State of the Economy.” We had insightful sessions from: Luc Aben, Chief Economist, who provided an overview of the current economic landscape, inflation trends, interest rates, and possible scenarios for 2024 and beyond. Hanneke Kroonenberg & Gordon Doull, who explored potential changes in tax policies, focusing on Box 1 & Box 3, and delved into the complexities of the current Dutch tax system. They also enriched the discussion with the traditions of Prinsjesdag, including the King’s Speech from the Throne, and its significance for the government’s plans in the coming year. 🖼️🏛️An INSEAD Night at the Museum🏛️🖼️ Tonight’s INSEAD Alumni Association the Netherlands event at Museum Van Loon was a profound experience, blending the worlds of art and leadership. The exhibition ‘Home and the World’ provided a stunning backdrop, inspiring deep reflection and meaningful dialogue. Under the expert guidance of executive coaches from The Preston Associates, we explored how art can influence our leadership styles. The artworks challenged us to think about society, nationalism, and the concept of 'state' in new ways, and we found powerful parallels to leadership. In intimate small group settings, we engaged with the art and each other, discussing how the themes of the exhibition can help us exemplify behaviors we wish to promote and reward. It was enlightening to see how centuries-old artistic expressions can still resonate deeply with contemporary leadership challenges.
