Another load test for a CAPE VLT (the 6th in the last 12 months) was recently performed in order to complete the certification process for becoming a certified lifting tool. In February 2024 we showed you the load test of the largest Vibro Lifting Tool in the world, the CAPE VLT-640 Quad with a staggering 3,000 tons SWL: https://lnkd.in/eBz8qH5y This time it was the smallest in the CAPE VLT range, the CAPE VLT-80 with an SWL of 100 tons for piles ranging in diameter between 20 and 84 inch. The load tests for the smaller units take place at the headquarters of CAPE Holland in Beilen on the purpose built load test bed, where load tests of up to 1,100 tons can be executed. In this case the CAPE VLT’s clamps are mounted on a piece of pile which is bolted to the test bed. The upend fork is connected via rigging and loadcells to the overhead beam which is supported by special hydraulic jacks which provide the pulling force for the load test. After being subjected to a 132 tons load for a set time, the CAPE VLT-80 successfully completed the lifting appliance certification process under Lloyd’s Register Code for Lifting Appliances in a Marine Environment (CLAME) and ready to go to the next project.

The worlds largest Vibro Lifting Tool, the CAPE VLT-640 Quad, was used by installation contractor DEME Group on board of its Offshore Heavy Lift DP3 installation vessel Orion to install 29 flanged monopiles with a bottom diameter up to 10 meters and a length of up to 91 meters for the OW Ocean Winds Moray West offshore wind farm in Scottish waters. The CAPE VLT was chosen as a mitigation measure to prevent pile run. Additional features, such as certified pile handling and upending capabilities, helped make the installation process much more controlled, particularly in combination with the Dynamic Positioning system of the vessel and the state of the art installation tools from DEME. All 29 piles were installed within a total of just 60 days. CAPE Holland is looking back on a great performance of the CAPE VLT with no mechanical breakdown of the equipment which was all newly built, including the newly developed power units (PU-2600) which were also stacked to reduce required deck space. The CAPE VLT-640 Triple was used by installation contractor Boskalis on board its Heavy Lift Vessel Bokalift 2 to install 12 flanged monopiles with a bottom diameter of up to 10 meters and a length of up to 91 meters for OW Ocean Winds' Moray West offshore wind farm in Scottish waters in harsh winter conditions. The CAPE VLT was chosen as a mitigation measure to prevent pile run. Additional features, such as certified pile handling and upending capabilities, helped make the installation process much more controlled, particularly in combination with the Dynamic Positioning system and motion-compensation pile gripper of the vessel. For this project, installation contractor Boskalis also used a quick-release connector supplied by CAPE Holland’s sister company Balltec Engineered Solutions, of which the receptacle was mounted directly on the CAPE VLT. This not only improved the safety and speed of the installation process but also significantly reduced the rigging height required. The piles were upended using the CAPE VLT in combination with the upending hinge of the Bokalift 2, which was designed and built by CAPE Holland’s other sister company, Osbit. CAPE Holland is looking back on a great performance of the CAPE VLT, with no mechanical breakdowns of the equipment, while it contained numerous innovations. Today CAPE Holland & Venterra Group had the pleasure to welcome Luxcara, Omexom, JBO | Jörss-Blunck-Ordemann GmbH and Heerema Marine Contractors to see our CAPE VLT-640 Triple which is currently stored at Breman Machinery B.V. Good to see that the interest in the new foundation installation technology is increasing. Having so many different companies around gave a fantastic opportunity to discuss our latest advancement, as well as some future innovations that will ensure Vibro driving remains the cutting edge for large diameter monopiles. The industry needs environmentally sustainable tools that offer significant operational benefits - a key focus for CAPE.
