Embracing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Research ✨ Yesterday, at the Public and Occupational Health meeting Amsterdam UMC, we had the privilege of hearing from Prof. Dr. Mai Chin A Paw, who emphasised the critical importance of diversity and inclusion in academia, particularly in research and employment. This meeting reinforced our belief that a diverse academic environment fosters innovation and produces outcomes that better serve society as a whole. Historically, scientific research has often been dominated by “WEIRD” perspectives - those from Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich and Democratic countries. This narrow focus not only perpetuates health inequalities but also limits the breadth of insights gained from more inclusive research. By relying on a selective group with similar backgrounds, we risk introducing bias and stifling innovation. See this paper for more ➡️ ChinAPaw, M. and Anselma, M., 2023. Let us dance around the world! Toward more diversity, equity, and inclusion in research. Journal for the Measurement of Physical Behaviour, 6(1), pp.1-5. We invite our colleagues and connections to share their thoughts and ideas on this vital topic. If you have further insights or suggestions, please do get in touch. Congratulations to our lead author, Marie Curie Alumni Association PhD Fellow Katrina Messiha and co-authors Mai Chin A Paw, Hans Ket, Qingfan An, Vinayak Anand-Kumar, Giuliana Longworth, Sebastien chastin and Teatske Altenburg for gaining significant exposure with their systematic review published in the Journal of Public Health (Oxford University Press), which has been recognised as one of the top 5 most discussed articles of 2023! 👏 👏 👏 The study [https://lnkd.in/eQRg_SF5] addresses an important gap in public health research by systematically analysing the limited contemporary applications of theories and theoretical frameworks in co-approaches of co-creation, co-design and co-production. Consequently, the study reinforces theoretical clarity regarding the 'why' and 'how' of using theoretical underpinnings in this way - such as Empowerment Theory in these co-approaches, thereby consolidating a foundation for more informed pertinent research in the future. Your Health is Your Wealth indeed! Last Saturday, 28th August, Amsterdam UMC team in collaboration with The Pentecostal Council of Churches, Netherland Heart Foundation (Hartstichting), and LOA Foundation had a very successful health awareness campaign program in Amsterdam Southeast. Although it rained most of the day, over 200 people mainly from the migrant community came for health check including blood pressure measurement, glucose, cholesterol etc. in our beautiful tent! Very grateful to Your Health is Your Wealth volunteers including Amsterdam UMC medical students for the great job done. Special thanks to Dr Silvia Nieuwenburg , Akua Brenya (GP) and PCC pastors especially Pastor Moses for the leadership and Hartstichting and LOA Foundation for teaming up with us for this great initiative. Tackling the high burden of cardiometabolic conditions especially in migrant communities needs all relevant players. For that we are grateful! Thanks to Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam Public Health for the support!

𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐯𝐢𝐚 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: ELLLA eHealth Living & Learning Lab 🚀 It’s increasingly important for researchers to demonstrate valorization in their work. A vision for valorization via education and how to achieve that have been less well recognized. Yet Amsterdam UMC's eHealth Living & Learning Lab Amsterdam (ELLLA) have made this a core part of their strategy. Today, ELLLA’s Linda Peute and David Neal presented their vision for valorization via education. Peute and Neal provided concrete examples of how they have put ELLLA’s strategy into action, and tips for those who may want to incorporate valorization in their own education activities: 💡 Be ambitious, come up with a vision and a strategy for valorization. Impact in practice that also benefits students doesn’t just happen by itself. 💡 You must enjoy collaborating with a more diverse stakeholder field than usual than might be the norm for educational activities. 💡 Given the large and diverse stakeholder field, clear communication that conveys your vision, what you want to achieve, and what you want to do to achieve it is essential. It must always be clear what the impact of activities are – for students, for society, and for all of the relevant stakeholders. Read more ⬇️
