iisel
A downloadable tool for Windows and Linux
iisel is a modern editor for textmode art.
It's pronounced the same as easel, the thing artists put their canvas' on.
I'd used a few alternative programs before, but none of them really captured the workflow I wanted perfectly, so I decided to make my own.
Please read the README before using iisel. It contains a list of known quirks and a full list of controls and directories that you might be interested in!
Features:
- A modern interface
- Support for any bitmap font
- Supports loading any GPL (GIMP's format) colour palettes
- Export to PNG (More formats might be added later)
- A canvas size of up to 256 x 256 characters
- Zoomable & scrollable canvas and glyph palettes to make working with smaller fonts easy
- An infinite number of layers (until your PC runs out of memory)
- A robust set of tools: Brush, Eraser, Dropper, Line, Rectangle, Filled Rectangle and Fill
- Compressed, source-control friendly project files. A project consisting of 100 256 x 256 layers will take around 2MB to 3MB.
- Unlimited quick undo/redo
Things I would like to add:
- More tools, including but not limited to: Ellipses, Select/Copy/Paste, Noise, Custom Brush, Nine-slice
- The ability to reorder layers
- Copy/Paste support for layers
- Random generation of layouts for roguelike games, using common algorithms like BSP and Cellular Automata
This is my first go at a program of this complexity, so I would really appreciate any feedback! If you find any bugs or have any feature requests then please contact me using the contact details in the README :)
Also if anyone fancies making iisel a textmode logo, that would be awesome! I'm ok at making a textmode editor, not so good at textmode art.
