Noggin Releases 'Big Heart Beats' Album to Promote Social-Emotional Learning for Preschoolers

Noggin, Nickelodeon’s Interactive Learning Service, Releases Big Heart Beats Album to Promote Social-Emotional Learning for Preschoolers

11 Original Songs Help Teach Young Children How to Manage Feelings, Develop Friendships and Understand Their Identity and the World

NEW YORK--Sept. 24, 2021--Noggin, Nickelodeon’s interactive learning service for preschoolers, today released its Big Heart Beats album to support parents, caregivers, and educators in their efforts to promote positive social and emotional skills for toddlers and young children. Featuring 11 brand-new original songs that address issues like friendship, diversity and inclusion, emotional intelligence, and citizenship, Big Heart Beats provides an accessible way for kids to learn about emotions and how to interact with the world.

The Big Heart Beats album is part of Noggin's social and emotional learning program focused on developing skills in self-awareness, empathy, and relationships. The album is currently available in the Noggin app and at BigHeartWorld.org, as well as all digital streaming platforms, including iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, Tidal, Pandora and more.

“Music can be a powerful learning experience that helps kids of all ages process emotions. Big Heart Beats helps early learners identify and understand their feelings in a healthy way,” said Kristen Kane, Executive Vice President, Noggin. “We hope families and teachers everywhere will enjoy these songs and use them to support little ones as they navigate an ever-changing and complex world.”

Using music and lyrics, Big Heart Beats supports educators and parents as they help their kids and families continue to adjust to the pandemic and begin to “phase back in” and restart “normal” life. The album can help guide conversations around managing feelings, especially anger, frustration and sadness, as well as help children develop social and communication skills even when they’re separated from peers.

Each song on Big Heart Beats is linked to a different Big Heart theme: learning about me, learning about you and learning about us. The goal of the campaign is to inspire children to grow up with confidence, self-awareness, empathy and the interpersonal skills needed to thrive in life.

The Big Heart Beats album tracklist includes six new songs: “I Love Myself,” “Share a Smile,” “The Sad Song,” “Helping Others,” “Up, Up, Up” and “Use My Ears to Listen;” as well as the previously released “Like Nobody Else,” “Celebrate Our Differences,” “How You Feel,” “Help Work it Out” and “A Friend Like You.” Each song taps the unique musical stylings and talent of different writers, producers and artists including Darlingside and Flor de Toloache, across several genres, spanning folk, jazz, pop, reggae and more.

From KRIS:

Health experts say more movement is key to clip obesity rate

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — During the COVID-19 pandemic, schools across the country closed their doors.

This move disrupted routines, increased stress and led to weight gain among children and teens.

"Parents need to be in charge of diet and management, parents decide when children eat and what they eat," said pediatrician Dr. Eric Baggerman.

These increases are not just about a child's eating habits. Lirone Speak is the sports director at the YMCA and also is an older brother.

Catching together

"I also coached him as well for 5 years already so we just have an inseparable bond," Speak said, adding his 11-year-old brother is different and adventurous. When he's not at football practice, he's visiting the Y.

"I was outside staying busy being active," Rae-taj Jackson said. "Playing basketball, playing football."

Speak helped keep his brother safe and active during the pandemic.

"I try to encourage him, let's go outside, let's go play football," Speak said. "We got all this free time now, there's no excuses."

The Centers for Disease Control reports that the percentage of obese children and teens increased to 22 percent, a 3 percent rise since 2019.

The biggest jump was seen in younger school-aged children and those who were already prone to obesity.

Baggerman said this was already a problem in South Texas before the COVID-19 pandemic. And being stuck at home didn't help.

"All these factors that contribute to the weight management were multiple during the pandemic," Baggerman said. "Factors like activity, eating, screen time."

Baggerman says most children that went into the pandemic overweight or obese experienced the largest increase, adding that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is all about movement.

"Activity for children should be fun," he said. "And I highly encourage it to be outside."

Activity can be through whatever means. Noggin, Nickelodeon's interactive learning platform designed for young children, recently released its Big Heart Beats Album.

Makeda Mays Green, vice president of digital consumer insights for Nickelodeon, says this collection of music is meant to to get kid's blood pumping.

"It encourages kids to get up and move, they can express themselves creatively, they can support their social and emotional development skills in the messages throughout all the songs," Green said.

Singing and dancing, the ultimate dance party anyone can join.

You can access the Big Heart Beats album here.

Parents of Young Children are Very Concerned about Keeping Kids Healthy from COVID, Social-Emotional Development, as New School Year Begins

Parents of Young Children are Very Concerned about Keeping Kids Healthy from COVID, Social-Emotional Development, as New School Year Begins

Families can text the word HEART to 274 448 for expert tips and activities by text message to support social-emotional learning, transition back to school

DENVER, Aug. 19, 2021 -- According to a new national survey of more than 400 parents with children ages 2-8, three-quarters of parents say they are concerned about their children's social and emotional learning, and the majority of parents are not comfortable with sending their children to school in person this fall. Only 26% of respondents said they were comfortable with in-person schooling, and 95% reported concern over their child catching COVID.

The survey, conducted this week by Bright by Text and Big Heart World, was shared via text message with parents across the country as school systems begin to open for the new school year.

Many parents said they are nervous about school protocols, including lack of mask mandates, large class sizes, and fewer options for remote learning. Parents remain concerned about community events as well, with only 10% of parents saying they are comfortable participating in indoor events with their children without masks; 48% being comfortable with indoor events if participants are masked; and 15% of families reporting not being comfortable with any group activities at this time.

Another top concern was children's social-emotional development. Parents reported more concern over social-emotional development than academic learning. Seventy-five percent of parents said they were concerned about their children's social and emotional learning, compared to 58% of parents who said they were very concerned or a little concerned with academics this school year. Only 31% of respondents indicated they were "very confident" in helping their child with social-emotional learning.

Earlier this summer, Bright by Text and Sparkler Learning launched a Big Heart World texting campaign to send parents and caregivers actionable tips to help them support their young children's social and emotional learning — a timely need right now.

Families with children ages 2-8 who want to receive the text messages can text HEART to 274 448. These messages — free and available in either English or Spanish — help parents guide their kids to grow big hearts, answer big questions, and support their children's healthy social and emotional development. The HEART campaign is fueled by Big Heart World, a social and emotional learning initiative presented by Sparkler in collaboration with Noggin, Nickelodeon’s interactive learning service for preschoolers.

The majority of survey respondents say that as a result of these text messages, they have talked to their children about a social-emotional topic (such as feelings, friends and diversity) and have tried an activity from the messages with their child.

Families who opt in to the service will also receive information from trusted organizations in their area, such as children's hospitals and health departments, with information about events, resources and keeping their children healthy.

"We know that text messages work: 95% of Bright by Text subscribers say our messages make them a more confident caregiver," said Jean McSpadden, President and CEO of Bright by Text. "We are proud to work with Big Heart World and other partners to address parents' biggest concerns as kids get back to school this year."

About Bright by Text
Bright by Text, a national non-profit, sends free text messages to parents and caregivers across the country to give every child the brightest possible start in life. Through tips, information, games and resources, Bright by Text is proven to build nurturing caregiver-child relationships, strengthen families, promote a child's healthy development, and improve school readiness. Messages are timed to a child's exact age, prenatally through age 8, and offered in both English and Spanish.

LaundryCares Free Laundry and Literacy Day Event in Denver, CO

LaundryCares Free Laundry and Literacy Day Event in Denver, CO

On Saturday, August 14, 2021, the LaundryCares Foundation will host a Free Laundry and Literacy Day event in collaboration with Too Small to Fail and Big Heart World in Denver, CO from 12 – 4 PM. The location of this event is Iliff Coin Laundry, 7511 E Iliff Ave, Denver, CO 80231.

Free Laundry & Literacy Day events provide free laundry services and cleaning products plus free food and fun activities for children and adults to enjoy. Laundry owners, distributors, manufacturer employees, and local community members will participate as volunteers helping to facilitate this event.

As part of the event, a new Family Read, Play & Learn space will be installed within this laundromat. These literacy play spaces provide a comfortable seating area, high-quality books, toys, and other materials designed to help parents engage in literacy-rich interactions with their children during laundry time. Similar learning spaces have been launched in laundromats across the nation through the Laundry Literacy Coalition – a partnership between Too Small to Fail and the LaundryCares Foundation. An independent evaluation conducted by NYU found that placing “Family Read, Play & Learn” spaces in laundromats had an overwhelmingly positive effect on children’s literacy-related activity during their visit. In total, throughout the course of the evaluation, researchers observed 1,378 instances of literacy-related activities in laundromats with these spaces compared to laundromats without them.

Millions of families in under-resourced communities visit laundromats each week to fulfill the basic need of having clean clothes. For many of these families, fulfilling this basic need can often be a challenge. With that in mind, Iliff Coin Laundry, the LaundryCares Foundation, and Too Small to Fail are excited and honored to offer a day of free laundry services for people in the neighborhood. Guests can bring an unlimited amount of laundry to the event and will receive free laundry products to help clean their clothes.

While the guests do their laundry, children can engage in early literacy activities with the Denver Public Library and puppet making with master puppeteer Marilyn Price. Free children’s books will be distributed to the families at the event.

This event will also serve as the launch Big Heart World’s Loads of Summer Love, an effort to provide families with fun, location-specific games to promote children’s social-emotional development while doing the laundry. Big Heart World is presented by Sparkler Learning in collaboration with Noggin, Nickelodeon’s interactive learning service for preschoolers. Sparkler Learning will send activity posters and coloring sheets to 100+ laundromats across the country as part of this initiative. It will also make songs from Noggin’s Big Heart Beats Album and other Big Heart World content available — so families can sing, dance, and learn together about understanding feelings, developing confidence, making friends, celebrating differences, and more.

"Everyone is excited to help this new store open its doors and already give back to the neighborhood the business will serve. We’re especially grateful for the installation of the new Family Read, Play & Learn Space here; it’s perfect for this location.” – Dan Naumann, Executive VP, LaundryCares Foundation

“We hope Loads of Summer Love will help parents turn laundry time into learning time, helping kids grow big hearts with the characters they love while doing the laundry with their grown-ups!” — Michael H. Levine, SVP for Learning and Impact at Noggin

“We’re grateful to the LaundryCares Foundation and to Too Small to Fail for their partnership and for their commitment to bringing learning to families where they are.” — Julia Levy, Executive Director, Sparkler Learning

Move This World Partners with Sparkler Learning to Launch 'Big Heart World' Social-Emotional Initiative Nationwide

Move This World Partners with Sparkler Learning to Launch “Big Heart World” Social-Emotional Initiative Nationwide

“Big Heart World” initiative will promote free social and emotional development resources to preschoolers and elementary students, incorporating Move This World’s evidence-based social emotional learning curriculum

NEW YORK--June 09, 2021--Move This World, the nation’s leading social emotional learning provider of multimedia curriculum, is collaborating with Sparkler Learning to promote healthy social and emotional development in children. The partnership will feature Move This World's evidence-based social and emotional learning curriculum into Big Heart World’s free and publicly available resources, including their “Power of Pause” participatory videos to help preschoolers and elementary school students understand, manage and express feelings, and solve problems.

“SEL is not just intangible and soft skills. It has proven to be able to help children process big feelings of grief, sadness, anger and even excitement and happiness,” said Sara Potler LaHayne, Founder and CEO of Move This World. “Through this partnership, we are excited to be able to share some of our most popular Power of Pause videos and other content to help children learn how to transition and calm down when they are experiencing big feelings.”

Big Heart World, presented by Sparkler Learning in partnership with Noggin, Nickelodeon’s interactive learning app for kids 2-6, aims to help parents and educators address the pressing social and emotional needs that young children have right now during COVID-19 and to provide action-oriented tools and resources that help grown-ups support children’s healthy social and emotional development. Big Heart World focuses on three key learning areas: awareness of self — identity, belonging, feelings and self-regulation; awareness of others — empathy and appreciation of diversity; and relationships with others — interpersonal strategies.

“We are delighted that Move This World is now part of a world-class group of partners assembled by Sparkler Learning. Their contributions will be an essential part of Big Heart World’s free toolkit for parents, caregivers, and educators — at a time when social and emotional learning is needed more than ever,” said Michael H. Levine, SVP for Learning and Impact at Noggin.

Big Heart World content will also be made available in Move This World’s early learning programs for SY21-22. For more information, visit www.bigheartworld.org.

Nickelodeon acquired Sparkler for Noggin in March 2019.

Noggin Launches ‘Big Heart World’ Social Initiative for Preschoolers

Featuring Nickelodeon fan-favorite characters, the campaign is designed to help kids meet social and educational challenges; Big Heart Beats album provides empowering and catchy songs to bolster the campaign’s messages, and will also be available Nick Jr. and the Nick Jr. YouTube channel.

Nickelodeon’s interactive learning service for preschoolers, Noggin, has launched a new initiative called Big Heart World. The multiplatform campaign, which aims to promote children’s healthy social and emotional development, will roll out throughout the year. The initiative includes an array of content and resources featuring Nickelodeon’s fan-favorite preschool characters, as well as all-new animated characters, designed to help kids build confidence, develop an appreciation for others, navigate relationships and contribute to a kinder world.

"Social and emotional learning helps children understand themselves, relate to others and stand up for what's right,” explained Noggin Executive Vice President (EVP) Kristen Kane. “It has always been a meaningful part of early childhood development, but after a year of isolation and stress, it's an especially pressing priority for families. The Big Heart World initiative presents new, engaging learning experiences from Noggin and a helpful multimedia destination for every family."

Noggin’s Big Heart World initiative focuses on three key learning areas: awareness of self—identity, belonging, feelings and self-regulation; awareness of others—empathy and appreciation of diversity; and relationships with others—interpersonal strategies. As part of the campaign a different focus will be highlighted each month with new content that includes:

  • Original songs and music videos from the brand-new Big Heart Beats album, a collection of 10 catchy and empowering songs to help educate preschoolers through music. The first song and music video “Like Nobody Else,” focuses on identity and is available now. Following their debut on Noggin, the music videos will air on the Nick Jr. channel and be available on the Nick Jr. YouTube channel.
  • New short-form videos and interactive games.
  • Parent, caregiver, and educator resources.
  • Family activity guides.

Timed to the launch of each month’s theme, songs from the Big Heart Beats album will be available on multiple digital platforms, including Apple Music, Spotify, iTunes, YouTube, Tidal, Amazon Music, and Pandora.

Big Heart World content is also available at BigHeartWorld.org, developed by nonprofit organization Sparkler Learning, with the generous support of the Walton Family Foundation. Noggin has partnered with Sparkler Learning to provide additional educational materials to early learning organizations, educators, parents, and caregivers.

In Noggin, learning is led by the Nickelodeon preschool characters kids know and love, and developed by education and child development experts. The interactive service offers an ever-expanding library of books, learning games, activities, exclusive shorts and 1,000+ ad-free episodes of preschool favorites like PAW Patrol, Peppa Pig and Blue’s Clues & You!
