PI Industries- bright spot while the agro chem sector remains in shambles! Summary- Pyroxasulfone and Fluindapyr to drive export contract manufacturing revenue while Pharma revenue to start developing and growing by Q3 FY 2025. Overview- Despite the Pyroxasulfone technical going off patent in the USA in H2 CY 2025, PI would not face any challenges in terms of volume and value as Kumiai the innovator shares excellent relationship with PI. At the same time Pyroxasulfone being a broad spectrum herbicide replaces the need for many acetyl based herbicides while also acting as a soul growth nutrient. Hence farmers in the USA are increasing preferring using Pyroxasulfone. Currently PI sell this product to Kumiai which further sells this to three channel partner in USA- FMC, Valent and Bayer. These 3 channel partners formulate this product with either flumioxazine or Fluthiacet methyl herbicides for better efficacy. Important point is that- 80% of the formulated sales of pyroxasulfone in the USA happen in the form of above mentioned blends and these blends are patented till 2032. Based on my discussions with all 3 end customers of Kumiai in USA- none of them have any plans to get into the technical manufacturing of pyroxysulfone on their own. Furthermore, due to existing tariffs on Chinese, US companies won’t be able to import either the Chinese made technical or formulated products at a cost competitive rate. Hence the Chinese threat is significantly lower. In China despite announcing capacities for Pyroxasulfone, no commercial production has yet started. Another major growth driver for PI’s export revenue would be Fluindapyr fungicide of FMC which is growing at a robust pace (set to grow to $300-400 mn market demand by 2028 for FMC). Biostimulants Under FCO Regulation: A New Era for the Industry ? Finally, Biostimulants have been brought under FCO regulation with Specifications guidelines! This is just the first list, with many more categories to follow soon. While this gazette presents exciting opportunities, it also introduces challenges for companies. Here’s what to expect: 🔹 **Brace for Turbulence** – Even serious players will face a bumpy ride due to the *unique specifications* requirements . Product specs will need reworking, and product labels will require redrafting. 🔹 **End of Brand Extensions** – Rampant brand extensions with questionable formulations will be phased out, and product differentiation will blur, as exceeding specifications won’t be possible. Crop wise extension shall also be tough to launch . 🔹 **Challenges for Startups** – Innovative startups will need to adapt to broader specifications, while smaller companies may struggle to comply with stringent norms under the **Essential Commodities Act**. 🔹 **Licensing and Storage Requirements** – Fertilizer licenses and proper storage space for biostimulants will be required for **C&Fs**, distributors, and retailers. Familiarizing with the “O” form will be crucial. Deviation will affect busisiness continuity . 🔹 **Leadership, R&D, and Legal Will Be Key** – Companies will need strong leadership and capable **R&D** and **legal teams** to navigate through selling permission requirements and defend their biological sales. Global players may seize the opportunity to register innovative products but there will be no protection of formulations . This move toward regulation brings greater monitoring and will weed out spurious players. Crop recommendations will pose challenges, but I believe **farmers** will ultimately benefit. India is setting a global example in regulating biostimulants, and we’re witnessing a **9(4)-like era** for this sector. Biostimulants have 3-5 years shelf life and significant inventory might be lying in the market for long time . Companies will struggle to meet label guidelines immediately . Let’s all show some patience as broader guidance is released on **Methods of Analysis (MoA)** , other guidelines are released and these regulations take shape.
