Suspect in Custody

BOULDER, Colo. – The Boulder Police Department is investigating a stabbing that occurred last night between members of the unhoused community.

At approximately 8:15 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 20, officers were called to a field west of the main library in the 1000 block of Arapahoe Avenue. They found an adult male who had been stabbed multiple times.

Witnesses provided information about the suspect who was seen running away from the area and at 8:41 p.m. officers found him and took him into custody. The suspect has been identified as Darrell Nelson Persson, 32. He was taken to jail on a charge of first-degree assault.

Officers on scene provided medical treatment to the victim, a 36-year-old male, until medical personnel arrived and transported him to the hospital. Though he had life threatening injuries last night, he is now in stable condition today.

Detectives do not believe the two men, who are both unhoused, knew each other. The initial investigation indicates that the stabbing happened after an argument over drug use and fire inside a tent.

This morning detectives obtained search warrants for several tents and other property believed to be associated with the involved community members and they are conducting additional investigation.

This investigation remains ongoing and more charges are possible. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Boulder Police tipline at 303-441-1974 or Detective Quayle at [email protected] regarding case 24-13356.

Boulder invites community to view Broadway Transit Improvements Virtual Open House

City of Boulder Communication Manager Julie Causa from City of Boulder · 20 Dec

Broadway is a key local and regional transit corridor where over 12,000 people travel by bus daily. The City of Boulder has developed conceptual designs for the Broadway Transit Improvements Project to improve bus travel time and reliability, and safety and accessibility for all travelers on parts of Broadway/CO 93 between Regent Drive and Table Mesa Drive.

During peak traffic hours, traffic congestion currently prevents reliable transit travel times, including greater delays at the Table Mesa Drive intersection for left-turning buses than for any other vehicle.

To reduce bus delays and significantly improve travel time and reliability, this project will:
— Add short segments of dedicated bus lanes to allow buses to bypass traffic queues at two intersections: Broadway and Regent Drive, and Broadway and Table Mesa Drive. There will be no impact to the number of regular vehicle lanes.
— Design and install additional safety and accessibility improvements for all travelers at these two key intersections.

The city will finalize designs in spring 2025 and anticipates construction next summer to limit impacts during the academic year.

You can visit the Virtual Open House to learn more and comment on conceptual designs through Jan. 26, 2025.

Scam Alert

Public Safety PIO Dionne Waugh from City of Boulder · 19 Dec
Photo from Public Safety PIO Dionne W.

The Jury Duty scam is circulating again, Boulder. Scammers are calling people, saying they have a warrant for their arrest and that they’re going to be arrested for not showing up for jury duty.

Scammers are also saying the person has another type of warrant and then demand money, usually via a wire transfer, to “take care of” the situation.

Don’t fall for it.

We’ve taken at least three or four calls/reports this week from community members who have been scammed or almost were. The thieves posed as law enforcement on the phone and demanded money in a variety of ways, from Zelle payments to bitcoin to gift cards to Coinstar.

Your local law enforcement agencies will not do this, and if you’re concerned, you can always call your local courthouse to see if you have a warrant. Please be aware of this scam and tell your friends and family so they don’t become victims.

Community members are invited to share their current travel experiences and ideas for future improvements via an online questionnaire, open through early January 2025.

The Folsom Street Safety Improvements Project is one of three priority corridor projects part of Boulder’s Core Arterial Network (CAN) initiative. The CAN is a years-long comprehensive roadway redesign effort toward safer, more connected and more comfortable travel on 13 arterial streets, which are key high-traffic streets.

The Vision Zero Action Plan guides city staff to pursue these proactive arterial network projects based on the Safe Streets Report finding that 67% of serious or fatal crashes occur on arterial streets despite them making up only 17% of Boulder’s total street network.

From January 2015 to July 2024, 566 crashes occurred on this part of Folsom Street, with people driving experiencing the most crashes at 82% of total crashes.

There were 20 serious or fatal crashes, with 95% disproportionately involving vulnerable road users — people walking, biking and rolling.

The street segment is also part of the city’s High Risk Network, which has identified where future severe crashes are most likely to happen.

Boulder Police Continue Investigating Sickened College Students

Public Safety PIO Dionne Waugh from City of Boulder · 10 Dec

BOULDER, Colo. – The Boulder Police Department is continuing its investigation after several college students were sickened at a fraternity party over the weekend.

The initial calls started coming in between 10 and 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7. Officers were called to the hospital and the Kappa Sigma fraternity at 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue for reports of adult males who were sick/overdosing. The preliminary information indicated six males were transported/treated at the hospital and by medical personnel on scene.

Officers now believe there were five males who were treated at the scene or transported by personal car or ambulance to the hospital for treatment, but that there could be more. One male—whose prognosis was initially grave—is now stable but remains at the hospital.

Based on the initial information, Narcan use, and evidence found at the scene, officers believed the males had overdosed on possibly tainted drugs and alcohol consumption. Out of an abundance of caution and in an effort to keep the community safe, the Boulder Police Department put out the news release on Sunday based on the preliminary information officers had at the time.

Further investigation since then has led detectives to believe the individuals consumed an extreme amount of alcohol and some had consumed drugs, which led to them become violently ill. It does not appear that fentanyl was involved.

Detectives seized cocaine found at the scene and it’s currently being tested. They’re also investigating whether the actions at the party were related to the fraternity.

This investigation is still in the early stages and detectives will be seeking cooperation from Kappa Sigma and its members.

The Boulder Police Department would like to remind the community about the dangers of illegal drug and alcohol consumption.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Detective Her at [email protected] or 303-441-1829 regarding case 24-12864.
