Launch of The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) 2022:
Special issue on food security and nutrition

FAO’s work on food security and nutrition statistics focuses on producing key indicators for tracking progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 2, which aims to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030.

FAO is custodian agency of the Prevalence of Undernourishment (PoU), which measures chronic hunger (SDG Indicator 2.1.1); and the prevalence of moderate or severe food insecurity, based on the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES), which measures different levels of food insecurity (SDG Indicator 2.1.2). These indicators are updated yearly and published in The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI), the most authoritative global report on progress towards ending hunger and malnutrition.

In this newsletter, we introduce the newly released SOFI report, which presents the latest updates on the food security and nutrition situation around the world, including updated estimates on the cost and affordability of healthy diets.

We also shine a light on the Food and Agriculture Microdata (FAM) Catalogue, an online platform launched by FAO in 2019, whose ambition is to become the leading microdata hub on food and agriculture.  As of today, FAM has published over 1090 datasets from 174 countries, providing access to the main relevant documentation of the datasets and, in most cases, to their microdata.

Finally, we present FAO's databases and capacity development initiatives geared towards achieving a healthy and sustainable food future for all.

FAO's Food and Agriculture Microdata Catalogue releases new FIES microdata

The new Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) microdata in the FAM Catalogue has been used to inform The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2022. This information will help countries to track their progress towards the achievement of the SDG indicator 2.1.2, for which FAO is a custodian agency.

Nutrition Surveys

Thanks to its partnership with FAO/WHO GIFT, FAM is continually expanding its collection on Nutrition studies, in order to make publicly available, individual food consumption data from a wide range of countries. Two additional studies from Cameroon and Nigeria have been recently published. These datasets can serve as a useful resource for anyone working in the field of food consumption, food safety and nutrition.

FAO and the Bureau of Statistics of Guyana collaborate to measure prevalence of food insecurity

FAO and the Bureau of Statistics of Guyana are collaborating to collect, analyse and disseminate data on the prevalence of food insecurity in Guyana. This will be done at the individual and household levels, utilising the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) methodology, which will be incorporated into the Bureau’s Labour Force Survey. E-LEARNING COURSES

Prevalence of Undernourishment

This course focuses on SDG Indicator 2.1.1, which is one of two indicators that focus on food insecurity. The PoU is an estimate of the proportion of the population facing serious food deprivation, and is derived from official national level information on food supply and consumption, and energy needs. This course has been developed to support countries in analysis and reporting for Indicator 2.1.1.

Take the course and certify your competencies (also available in French and Spanish)

Using the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES)

In the context of reporting on the SDG Indicator 2.1.2, this course introduces the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) and explains how it can be used to measure food security. It provides guidance on the collection and analysis of data, and on how the information provided by the FIES can be used to inform and guide policy.
