Ladakh-based political activist Sajjad Hussain Kargili has recently called upon Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju to advocate for the introduction of a specialized course on ‘Shia Theology’ at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University in Delhi. The activist, identified as Shahnawaz Hussain, has emphasized the importance of incorporating a deeper understanding of Shia Muslim beliefs and practices into academic curricula, particularly within the context of Indian religious and cultural diversity.
Kargili, a representative of Ladakh’s largest Islamic organisation Jamiat Ul Ulama Isna Asharia Kargil, also requested the Centre to establish a residential coaching institute in Ladakh to prepare students for national competitive exams like the UPSC, NEET, JEE, and others.
The memorandum submitted on Thursday included several other proposals to empower the youth of Ladakh and promote the region’s cultural heritage.
The activist’s proposal is grounded in the notion that religious education, when delivered in an academic setting, can help break down stereotypes and promote peaceful coexistence. Hussain highlighted that while Jamia Millia Islamia already offers courses on Islamic studies, including Sunni perspectives, there is a gap in the comprehensive study of Shia theological thought. Introducing such a course would offer students an opportunity to engage with a broader spectrum of Islamic scholarship, Hussain argued.
In his letter to Rijiju, Hussain further underscored the importance of understanding the theological and philosophical differences between Sunni and Shia Islam.
According to him, this knowledge is crucial not only for inter-sectarian harmony but also for fostering a more nuanced understanding of the diverse practices and beliefs within the Muslim community. Hussain also pointed out that Shia Muslims, particularly in regions like Ladakh, have contributed immensely to the cultural and historical tapestry of India.
It proposed to provide a special fellowship programme under the Ministry of Minority Affairs for the youth of Ladakh, aimed at giving young people exposure to governance and leadership training. ( With Agencies Inputs)
