Strictly Come Dancing is about more than just learning a new skill for Annabel Croft – the BBC series is helping the former tennis player navigate her grief.
The 57-year-old signed up for the programme after her late husband Mel Coleman died of cancer in May aged 60. After suffering from stomach pains for two months, he was diagnosed with stage three cancer and died within eight weeks.
She shared the devastating news on social media: ‘My beloved Mel passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning after a short battle with cancer.’
‘My family and I are completely heartbroken and ask for privacy at this very sad time.’
Now, Annabel has admitted her participation has been a welcome break from ‘dark thoughts’.

While appearing on Lorraine with her dance partner Johannes Radebe she said: ‘It’s [Strictly] been a nice distraction from grief.

‘It’s been nice to do something joyful and use my body, and try to rest my brain from thinking too many dark thoughts.’
Her inclusion in the series is extra special as Coleman was a huge Strictly fan, and he especially enjoyed watching 36-year-old Johannes.
‘He was a huge fan of this gorgeous man,’ Annabel told Lorraine Kelly.

The host then provided some words of encouragement, telling the pair they were on the right path to keep getting better.
‘I know it’s a competition, and everyone focuses on that and asks us about the glitterball, but we’re just thinking about each dance and enjoying the moment,’ Sky Sports presenter Annabel replied.
For their Saturday night performance, Annabel and Johannes did a quickstep to Katrina & The Waves’s Walking On Sunshine, which was given a score of 28.

Craig Revel Horwood was particularly unimpressed and whipped out his four paddle.
Reflecting on the judgement Annabel said it was a ‘little harsh,’ but is understanding.

‘I have to take it in on the chin,’ she stated.
‘I wouldn’t expect to get a load of praise every time I dance.’
Despite the critique, Annabel and Johannes survived the first elimination which saw Les Dennis exit the competition, and so will now be tackling a Breakfast at Tiffany’s themed waltz for movie week.
