catheterization, intermittent

catheterization, intermittent

The passage of a urinary catheter to empty the bladder on an ‘as required’ basis in cases of outflow obstruction as from prostate gland enlargement. The procedure can be performed by the sufferer himself and may afford great relief. Current medical opinion is that the method is safe, effective and could, with benefit, be more widely used.
