argentaffin cell

A cell that forms cytoplasmic deposits of metallic silver from silver salts, a histochemical reaction due to the serotonin (5 HT) secreted by argentaffin cells, which are located in the GI mucosa, are of neural crest origin, and are now commonly identified by more elegant and specific immunohistochemical stains for neuroendocrine cells.
