Population-level production of staminate aments and seeds
We estimated the total production of staminate aments (male flowers) from 1988 to 1993, and total seedfall from 1987 to 1993.
In the laboratory, we separated the staminate aments of Carpinus species from the contents of the seed traps and weighed them after oven-drying (at 80 [degrees] C for 3 d).
In 1995, when all the species produced large amounts of flowers, we observed the growth and survival of female flowers from pistillate aments to fruiting branches.
On defense, Flanagan at third base, Delaney in the outfield and pitcher Ament made all the plays in the field for Dragon 88.
