Adaptable Maker Projects for Academic Classrooms

Diane Brancazio - K-12 Maker Lab at MIT

Maker projects can engage students and improve learning experiences in K-12 academic classes. Integrating open-ended, hands-on, creative activities with cool tools in an academic classroom helps students develop tech skills, make personal connections to the content, formulate and resolve their own questions, and express their learning. Maker projects also reduce barriers to students taking STEM classes and pursuing a technical career path by giving them skills and familiarity with current technologies. The K-12 Maker team from the MIT Edgerton Center supports teachers in bringing these experiences to their students. Explore our resources on how to get a maker culture going in school. Along with sample projects we will focus on project design, teacher practices, and makerspace setup.

Lune - Gaming Console For Music Instruments

Shrey Malhotra - Lune Acoustics

Lune is an interplay of hardware and software which brings a new way to game with musical instruments. We’ve created an experience that makes playing music less frustrating by focusing on a gaming-first approach. You come for the fun but stay for the learning. Did you know 90% of people who tried playing a music instrument quit within the first year because it’s hard to stay motivated and gets boring? Moreoever people are now discovering that you don't have to be a musician or a student of music to enjoy playing an instrument. We wanted to build something fun and hence Lune was born. Imagine a Gaming Console but for Musical Instruments. This for the gamers who like to play music and all the musicians who like to game.

Practical AI for Makers

Sridhar Rajagopal

AI is the current buzz word, with deep learning and other models now capable of being run on Edge Devices, aside from the Cloud. As Makers, how can we take advantage of this burgeoning field to incorporate cool new functionality into the things we make? For the beginner, this can be a very daunting field. In this presentation, we'll take a 30,000 foot view of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, especially as it pertains to Edge AI (translation-we won't get bogged down by nitty-gritty now!). We will look at the various practical applications they can be used for, the various tools and frameworks that are available to utilize, and practical considerations of how to build and deploy a robust (not toy!) model that can run on your Arduino, Raspberry Pi or other suitable MCUs/SBCs.

What is a Drawing Machine?

Pablo Garcia

It's 2024 and Pen Plotters are all the rage again! Drawing machines continue to capture the maker's imagination, but we've been here before. Since the Renaissance, humans have used machines to draw. Early machines assisted artists in making life-like renderings, but they soon evolved into complex devices that visualize data, measure natural phenomena, perform sophisticated mathematical calculations, automate written communication, trace copies of images, study anatomy, and even entertain children. Drawing machines have persisted across the arts, sciences, and humanities for six centuries. This talk will connect the dots between the drawing machines of today and our history of human-machine creative collaborations to inspire the creative art machines of the future!
