We want to make sure our students can get the most out of the experience and are prepared to do their best when they compete in UC Grad Slam. Leading the Badass Babes of Botany

UC Davis postdoctoral scholar Marina LaForgia was recently awarded a 2022 For Women in Science Fellowship from L'Oréal USA, making her one of only five postdoctoral scholars in the United States to receive this grant. LaForgia is using the funds to start a class "The Badass Babes of Botany."

Meet Ryan Hodge
Ryan Hodge, a UC Davis Ph.D. candidate in the Human Development Graduate Group, has assumed the role of Graduate Student Advisor to the Dean of Graduate Studies and to the Chancellor (GSADC) for the 2022-23 academic year. We had a chance to meet with Hodge and ask him a few questions.

2022 Outstanding Grad Program Coordinator
It’s not often that administrators are described as guardian angels. But that’s how students described Erin Kent, Ph.D., this year's Outstanding Graduate Program Coordinator. Kent is the graduate program coordinator of the Integrative Pathobiology Graduate Group, as well as the Veterinary Scientist Training Program.

FELLOWSHIPS, GRANTS AND FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES 

$50K Innovator Fellowship
Deadline: Nov. 13 | Learn more and apply
Ph.D.s and postdocs: Work with the Innovation Institute for Food and Health’s venture-capital partners in an immersive, hands-on experience in a food and health investment environment, gaining real-world business and entrepreneurial skills while using your scientific expertise to evaluate food and health startups. The program provides winning Innovator Fellows up to $50,000 in funding. 

AAUW International Fellowships 
Deadline: Nov. 15 | Learn more and apply
International Fellowships are awarded for full-time study or research in the United States to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Both graduate and postgraduate studies at accredited U.S. institutions are supported. Recipients are selected for academic achievement and demonstrated commitment to women and girls. Recipients return to their home countries to become leaders in business, government, academia, community activism, the arts and sciences. 

Critical Language Scholarship Program
Deadline: Nov. 16 @ 8 p.m. EST | Learn more and apply
The scholarship provides funding for eight to 10 weeks of intensive language study abroad over the summer. Instruction is offered in15 languages including Arabic, Hindi, Punjabi, Korean, Persian, Russian, Turkish and Urdu. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. 

NAEd/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship Program
Deadline: Nov. 17 @ 5 p.m. EST | Learn more and apply
The fellowship provides $70K to support non-residential postdoctoral proposals that make significant scholarly contributions to the field of education. 

Public Scholars for the Future
Deadline: Nov. 21 | Learn more and apply
Public Scholars for the Future supports UC Davis doctoral students who are interested in or actively pursuing community-engaged research. The program includes a graduate-level class on public scholarship and funding for community-engaged scholarship.

DOD SMART Scholarship
Deadline: Dec.1 @ 3 p.m. PST | Learn more and apply
The SMART scholarship-for-service program provides funding to masters and Ph.D. students pursuing in STEM disciplines. Students receive full tuition, monthly stipends, health insurance and book allowances, and summer internships at DOD labs and agencies. After graduation scholars work in a civilian position at the sponsoring facility. Citizens of the U.S., Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the United Kingdom may apply.

NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein Individual NRSA Fellowship 
Deadline: Dec. 8 | Learn more and apply
NIH NRSA awards support the training of biomedical, behavioral and clinical researchers through individual pre- and postdoctoral fellowships. The fellowship provides a stipend and partial tuition and fee support.

Ford Foundation Fellowship
Deadline: Dec. 9 and 16 | Learn more and apply
The foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. Dissertation and postdoctoral fellowship applications are due Dec. 9; predoctoral fellowship applications are due Dec. 16.

Graduate Student Career Development Assistance Award
The UC Davis Internship and Career Center is taking applications for a $1,000 award that is available to current UC Davis graduate students who completed an unpaid internship between June-Sept. 2022. Apply by Nov. 14. Learn more and apply.

Call for Proposals: 2023 Graduate Public Scholars
UC Davis Humanities Institute invites doctoral and MFA students to join the 2023 cohort of Graduate Public Scholars. The programs introduces graduate students to the aspects of collaborating with members of the public through their scholarship. Applications due Nov. 18 at 5 p.m. Learn more or apply.

Emergency Grant Program
New this academic year, Graduate Studies is offering a grant program to help graduate students experiencing a crisis. The Graduate Student Emergency Grant Program provides support for graduate students experiencing unexpected challenges that impede their progress toward their degrees. Learn more.

Call for Nominations: Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching Award
This award recognizes the contributions of graduate students to teaching and learning at UC Davis. Currently enrolled graduate students who have been employed on this campus as Teaching Assistants and/or Associate Instructors are eligible. Any member of the university community having direct experience with the student's teaching may nominate, including undergraduate students. Nominations are due March 10, 2023. Graduate Studies is excited to announce the Spring 2023 Commencement ceremony will be held on June 15, 2023. Time and location are TBD. Graduate Studies does not host a Fall Commencement Ceremony.

Migrant Feelings, Migrant Knowledge

Finding & Organizing Your Secondary Sources Writing Retreat

Ph.D. student and 2022 Grad Slam winner Alice Dien will present tools for finding and organizing your secondary sources and help you build a consistent methodology for research success. After a short presentation, Dien will be available for one-on-one assistance and advice on your work. There is no need to stay for the full three-hour workshop.

Creating an Inclusive Classroom
