Hitting the Wall: From the Sahara to the Office It was Day 4 of the Marathon des Sables. The day before, I had pushed through an 85KM stretch—17 hours of relentless movement. I was already three hours in. I had several blisters, some stacked on top of each other. Arse chafing? Oh, it was real (IYKYK!). The temperature had hit 47 degrees, and I was staring down the barrel of a 10KM stretch of pure, unrelenting sand dunes. But not just any sand—the soft, soul-sucking kind. And then there was the guy beside me. No matter how I adjusted my pace, I couldn’t shake him. With every step, his metal cup clanged like a gong, driving me mad. Inside my head, everything irritated me. Songs looped endlessly, turning into a mental torture playlist. I started thinking about people who had annoyed me in my life and plotted ridiculous revenge scenarios. I had hit the wall. But what can you do when you hit the wall, whether in work or in sports? My approach is simple, and it’s something I teach my 12-year-old daughter no matter the situation. First, recognize it! The wall could be a result of various factors—lack of sleep, pressure from above or below, diet, energy levels, or mental well-being. The most important step is to acknowledge it. Understanding what’s causing your wall is crucial because only then can you start to deal with it. Second, here’s the secret: There are only a few things you can do with a wall. You can try to go over it, go under it, go around it, or break through it. Each situation is different, but if you structure your thinking this way, you’ll at least have a framework that ensures you’ve explored every option. Or… take a break from the wall. Step away, sleep on it, and come back later. Sometimes, with a little distance, you’ll find that the wall has changed, or a new path around it has appeared. Who says walls always have to stay the same? I hit the wall often. Over the past 20(ish) years of building businesses from the ground up in the region, I’ve encountered countless walls. As soon as one falls, another appears. It can be frustrating, but by understanding the challenge and working together with our teams to identify solutions, those walls start to crumble. This October, I’m taking on my first Ironman. There have been plenty of wall since I started training 3 months ago and are plenty of walls ahead—both physical and mental—but they’re falling one by one. Well, most of them. I’m still struggling to get over the wall of wearing the all-lycra tri-suit…but I will spare you that visual pain!
