Today is Vesak in Sri Lanka.... ✨ Vesak is a major religious and cultural festival in Sri Lanka, celebrated on the full moon day in May. It is one of the most significant days for Buddhists worldwide, commemorating key events in Lord Buddha's life: his birth in Lumbini, his enlightenment, and his passing (Parinibbana) over 2500 years ago. In Sri Lanka and other Asian countries like India, Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan, Vesak is marked with various religious activities. People participate in Sil campaigns, Bodhi Poojas, and Dansalas, where food and drinks are freely given. Devotional songs (Bakthi Gee), pandols (thoran), and lanterns are also common. Temples across Sri Lanka are filled with devotees who worship, offer flowers, light lamps, and burn incense. Buddhists often wear white and spend the day at the temple, reaffirming their commitment to Buddha's teachings. Alms-giving (Dana) is a key part of Vesak, symbolizing the sharing of joy and peace. During Vesak week, the sale of alcohol and meat is typically banned. Homes and public places are decorated, and various cultural events are held. Electrically lit Vesak pandols (thoranas) depict stories from Buddha’s past lives, and colorful Vesak lanterns (koodu) are displayed to honor Buddha's teachings. Lantern competitions are also popular, with prizes for the best designs. Vesak is a beautiful blend of spirituality, tradition, and community spirit. It not only commemorates significant events in Buddha's life but also promotes values like sharing, compassion, and reflection. The decorations and cultural events bring people together, creating a festive and harmonious atmosphere. Vesak’s emphasis on non-violence, with the ban on meat and alcohol, further highlights its message of peace and mindfulness.

This special occasion marks the transition from the old year to the new. On the 14th of April, as the sun moves from the Pisces zodiac sign to Aries, the new year officially begins according to our traditional calendar. The festivities begin on the 13th of April when everyone stops working and prepares to welcome the new year. Astrology specialists determine the auspicious timings for these celebrations. As the clock strikes the specific timing, known as Nekatha, on the 14th of April, every household in the entire country gathers together to cook milk rice, symbolizing the beginning of a fresh start. New Year's Days are the time for families to reunite and bond. Our tables are filled with delicious traditional food, and laughter fills the air as everyone shares in the joy of the occasion. Traditional games add to the festive atmosphere, and it's customary to visit relatives with gifts to spread happiness and good wishes. On the 15th of April, at a specific time, elders of the household or monks at village temples anoint oil on everyone's heads, imparting blessings for a prosperous year ahead and a life free from troubles. It's a beautiful tradition that symbolizes the hope for a bright future and long-lasting happiness.
