The League of Legends World Championship 2023 (also known as LoL Worlds 2023 or just Worlds 2023) is the crowning event of League of Legends esports for the year. The tournament includes 22 teams from all regions of the game in a months-long race for the Summoner's Cup.

For this Worlds tournament Riot introduced a Swiss Format which will be replacing the Group Stage of previous years, and a new qualifying series to determine the last spot between 4th Seed of Europe and North America.^[1]

Format[edit]

Qualification
- 22 teams from professional leagues will qualify for the event.
- LPL and LCK will have 4 slots, while LEC and LCS will have 3 slots, PCS and VCS will have 2 slots, remaining slots will be one each for CBLOL, LJL, LLA and Worlds Qualifying Series.^[1]

Play-In Round 1 - October 10^th - 14^th
- Eight teams are divided into two groups where they play a Double Elimination bracket
- All matches are played in a Bo3.
- Top 2 teams in each group advance to Play-In Round 2.
- Bottom 2 teams in each group are eliminated.

Play-In Round 2 - October 15^th
- Four teams from Play-In: Round 1.
- The Upper Bracket winner from each group compete against Lower Bracket winners of the other group
- All matches are played in a Bo5.
- Two winners will advance to Swiss.

Swiss - October 19^th - 23^rd and 26^th - 29^th
- Two teams from the Play-In Stage join fourteen teams with direct entry from China, South Korea, Europe and North America
- 16 Team Swiss System Format
  - Round 1 teams will be paired against teams from a different region
  - Rounds 2 to 5 are seeded based on each team win-loss record
  - Elimination and Advancement matches are Bo3
  - All other matches are Bo1.
- Teams that reach 3 wins in swiss advance to Knockout Stage.
- Teams that reach 3 losses in swiss are eliminated.
- Throughout the Swiss Stage, side selection will be determined by initial draw pool - the higher pool will receive side selection.
- In matches between teams from the same draw pool, side selection will be determined by team's drawing order.

Knockout Stage - November 2^nd - 5^th, November 11^th - 12^th and November 19^th
- Eight teams play in a single elimination bracket.
- Side Selection Privilege
  - Teams with Side Selection Privilege can choose the side in game 1, after that, the losing team can choose the side in the next game.
  - In Quarterfinals, Side Selection Privilege will be granted to teams with better match record in Swiss Stage. In the case where both teams have the same match record, Side Selection Privilege will be determined by the order teams are drawn in Quarterfinals.
  - In the following matches, the Side Selection Privilege will be determined by coin flip.
- All matches are Bo5.

Patch Information
- Worlds 2023 will be played on Patch 13.19.
- Naafiri and Briar were disabled for this tournament due to the "New Champions and VGUs must be enabled for playoffs in all four of the top regions in order to be playable at the next international tournament." policy.^[2]

Worlds 2023 Draw Show[edit]

The Worlds Draw Show will be held after LEC Season Finals to place teams into groups for the Play-In Stage of the 2023 World Championship.^[3]

Teams are splited into 2 seed pools to ensure quality groups.
- 8 teams are splited into 2 pools
  - Pool 1 will consist of WQS (BDS/GG), PCS1 (PSG), VCS1 (GAM), and PCS2 (CFO).
  - Pool 2 will consist of VCS2 (TW), LLA1 (R7), CBLOL1 (LLL), and LJL1 (DFM).
Two teams from each Pool will be seeded to each group.
The first round of the Play-In will always be played against a team from a different Pool.
No more than two teams from the same region can be in a group.

Swiss Stage Draw Show will be held after the completion of the Play-in and each round of play.

  - Pool 1 will consist of LPL1 (JDG), LCK1 (GEN), LEC1 (G2), and LCS1 (NRG).
  - Pool 2 will consist of LPL2 (BLG), LCK2 (T1), LEC2 (FNC), and LCS2 (C9).
  - Pool 3 will consist of LPL3 (LNG), LCK3 (KT), LEC3 (MAD), and LCS3 (TL).
  - Pool 4 will consist of LPL4 (WBG), LCK4 (DK) and 2 Play-In Stage winners (GAM & BDS)
Two teams from each Pool will be seeded to each group.
Pool 1 teams will face Pool 4 teams, while Pool 2 teams will face Pool 3 teams in the first round.
No team will play a team from their own region in the first round.
Following the first round of play, there will be another draw for the second round to pair teams with the same record against one another - this time with no further draw restrictions.

Quarterfinal matchups will be decided by an on-stage draw following the final day of the Swiss Stage.

- In this draw, teams that advanced with a 3-0 record will be matched against teams that advanced with a 3-2 record.
- The remaining teams will then be matched against one another.
