Thailand’s Constitutional Court delivers its verdict on a media shareholding case of opposition figure Pita Limcharoenrat which could result in his disqualification from politics after he led the progressive Move Forward Party to win most votes in a recent general election.

Pita has been on a forced political hiatus as the military-appointed Senate blocked his bid to become prime minister.

Critics say efforts to keep him sidelined were aided by the conservative Constitutional Court.

Among the pledges made by Pita and the MFP that angered Thailand’s powerful institutions: vows to reform the military, tackle monopolies and amend the controversial lese-majesty law that forbids criticism of the monarchy.

Today, the Constitutional Court will deliver a verdict on a charge that Pita wrongly held shares in a media company during his time as an MP.

He says the shares were part of his late father’s estate and were in a company that had long ceased operations.
