KHNP HOT NEWS _ 2024.07.23. KHNP President & CEO Joo-ho Whang Gives Opening Plenary Speech at INMM Annual Meeting - Displayed Korea’s will for nuclear nonproliferation and international cooperation - Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) announced that President and CEO Joo-ho Whang attended the annual meeting of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM) held in Portland on July 22 as a plenary speaker to address the “Meeting the Moment: Nuclear Stewardship in an Age of New Technology and Global Tensions.” Established in 1958, the INMM is a globally renowned academic organization that conducts research on management of nuclear material accountancy, nuclear security, and nuclear nonproliferation. Held every July, the INMM Annual Meeting is an international forum that welcomes over 1,000 members from international organizations, such as the IAEA, U.S. government officials, and experts from other national research institutes. KHNP President and CEO Joo-ho Whang was appointed President of the INMM Korea Chapter last January, and was invited as a plenary speaker for the 65th annual meeting. The opening ceremony comprised plenary speeches from four members, including President Whang and Acting Principal Deputy Administrator Corey Hinderstein of the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). The ceremony continued with a panel discussion on the peaceful use of nuclear power and international cooperation measures for nuclear nonproliferation policies. In his plenary speech, President Whang mentioned, “Nuclear power’s role is becoming more crucial in the midst of response to climate change and ensuring energy security. Here, we face three challenges: ensuring nuclear nonproliferation through horizontal proliferation of nuclear power; securing a stable supply of nuclear fuel; and international cooperation for SMR development. Korea is capable of contributing to all of these areas.” He added, “To overcome these challenges, we must expand the cooperative efforts between Korean and U.S. nuclear power sectors, including joint policy research for the advancement of nonproliferation, promotion of collaborative work for stable nuclear fuel supply chains, and joint R&D projects.” In the following panel discussion, NNSA Acting Principal Deputy Administrator Hinderstein agreed with President Whang’s speech and emphasized the importance of solidarity with Korea for nuclear nonproliferation and the stability of the fuel supply. <End> #KHNP #KHNPCEO #JoohoWhang #Speech #INMMAnnualMeeting #INMMA #InstituteofNuclearMaterialsManagement #nuclear

KHNP HOT NEWS _ 2024.07.24. KHNP Starts Construction for “Imha Dam’s Floating Photovoltaic Power Project” - First project in Korea to construct a new renewable energy cluster- On the 24th, the groundbreaking ceremony for the “Imha Dam’s Floating Photovoltaic Energy Cluster Project” was held at the Independence Movement Memorial Hall in Andong, attended by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (KHNP; President & CEO Joo-ho Whang) and Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-water, CEO Seog-dae Yun). Around 100 individuals attended the ceremony, including locals and notable members such as Sang-jo Yoon, Head of KHNP’s Green Energy Business Division, Seog-dae Yun, CEO of K-water and Gi-chang Kwon, Andong-si Mayor. After starting construction in July, the floating photovoltaic power unit aims to achieve zero accidents and commercial development. Its capacity of 47 MW is the highest in Korea for a floating photovoltaic facility within a multipurpose dam. Solar panels will be installed on buoyant units above the water surface to generate electricity. Meanwhile, the power generation facility will be built to resemble the Korean flag and Mugunghwa, Korea’s national flower, to harmonize with the surroundings. Andong-si participated as the execution organization, KHNP and K-water as co-developers, and Top Solar as the constructor. The project also entails a benefit-sharing model where residents can invest to earn profits. This design will allow around 4,500 locals within a 1 km radius of the floating photovoltaic plant to share the profit from its power supply. In December 2021, Imha Dam’s floating photovoltaic power project was designated Korea’s first new renewable energy cluster. According to Article 27 of the Act on the Promotion of the Development, Use, and Diffusion of New and Renewable Energy, an “energy cluster” refers to a sector designated to build and operate an eco-friendly, new renewable power plant with a generation volume of at least 40 MW. Sang-jo Yoon, Head of KHNP’s Green Energy Business Division, commented, “We expect the Imha Dam’s Floating Photovoltaic Power Project to play a crucial role in achieving Korea’s carbon neutrality.” He added, “We will cooperate closely with the national government, regional governments, K-water, and locals for the project’s success.” <End> #KHNP #ImhaDam #FloatingPhotovoltaicPowerProject #multipurposedam #renewableenergy #Andong #floatingphotovoltaicpower #energycluster

KHNP HOT NEWS _ 2024.07.17. KHNP is ready to support to secure the energy needs of the Czech Republic KHNP is finally selected as the preferred bidder of the tender for the completion of a nuclear unit in the Czech Republic. KHNP will begin intensive negotiations with the owner of the project according to the announcement from the Czech government to conclude the contract by March 2025. According to the Czech government, the total project cost estimated by the Czech side amounts to around 200 billion CZK for a unit, and around 400 billion CZK for two units. The final contract value will be decided after the contract negotiations with KHNP. The total project cost calculated by the Czech government, which includes construction cost and contingency allowance, does not show the contract value with the vendor. The final contract amount may vary depending on the outcome of the contract negotiations. For KHNP, this opportunity could represent the first contract to build nuclear power plants in Europe. Now KHNP is ready to support to provide clean, reliable and affordable energy to the Czech Republic. "The Czech government selected KHNP as the preferred bidder based on our internationally recognised capabilities in nuclear power plant construction. We are proud that KHNP has been able to become an important player in supporting to meet energy needs and reduce carbon emissions, extending beyond Korea," stated Dr. Jooho Whang, CEO of KHNP. "A nuclear project means long-term cooperation for the next 100 years or so, from construction to operation. The construction of the APR1000 reactors would thus guarantee the long-term development of partnership and friendship for both countries. Thus, a strengthened partnership between the governments of both countries could enable extensive cooperation across a wide range of areas. We see this as a major commitment and will do everything possible in the final negotiations to ensure that the APR1000 reactor is actually built in the Czech Republic," he added. In connection with the construction of the nuclear units, KHNP will continue to seek maximum involvement of Czech companies in the project. Since 2016, KHNP has already identified over 200 potential Czech suppliers and signed more than 76 MoUs with Czech companies as a basis for future cooperation. These include binding agreements. Alongside efforts to enhance the APR1000’s competitiveness, KHNP has persistently engaged with community members in the region designated for the new nuclear plant. The company’s commitment to sincere communication with the local community is evident through efforts such as sponsoring a local sports team, participating in volunteer activities, and engaging in cultural exchanges. This has garnered trust from a wide range of stakeholders and undoubtedly contributed to the company being selected as the preferred bidder in a positive way. #KHNP #Czech #CzechRepublic #energy #nuclear #nuclearnewbuildproject #APR1000 #nuclearpowerplants

KHNP HOT NEWS _ 2024.07.02. KHNP Applies Independently Developed Nuclear Environmental Fatigue Monitoring System to Nuclear Power Plant Operations for the First Time Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP; President & CEO Joo-ho Whang) has independently developed the Nuclear Fatigue Monitoring System 2.0 (NuFMS 2.0), which was made by applying the latest regulations for the safe operation of the nuclear power plant, and initiated its operation. The fatigue monitoring system regularly evaluates the level of fatigue damage accumulated in core devices and pipes in the nuclear power plant to monitor the power plant's integrity. While existing fatigue monitoring systems evaluated facilities by applying the characteristics of materials in air condition, KHNP developed an upgraded system with a coolant environment to watch over devices and pipes more accurately. KHNP first implemented this system in Shin-Hanul Unit 1 in April and plans to gradually expand and establish the system in domestic nuclear power plants, including Kori Unit 2, which is under evaluation for continued operations. Hocheol Shin, the Head of the KHNP Central Research Institute, commented, “This technology will further enhance the safety and reliability of operating nuclear power plants, and we expect to also apply this technology to the innovative small modular reactors(i-SMR) in the near future to heighten SMR’s competitive edge in export.” <End> ✅️ To learn more about this : https://lnkd.in/gynRybVs #KHNP #Nuclear #NuclearPowerPlant #ShinHanulUnit1 #iSMR #EnvironmentalFatigueMonitoringSystem #KoriUnit2 #SMR

#KHNP has independently developed a plasma #radioactive waste treatment facility, which has proven its reliability by achieving a cumulative stable operation of 2,083 hours. The plasma treatment facility, which generates heat exceeding 1,600°C using an electric arc phenomenon similar to lightning, is commonly used in the industrial sector for purposes such as metal cutting and nanomaterial development. KHNP has been developing this technology for the treatment of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste since 1996. By utilizing plasma treatment technology, radioactive waste such as metals, concrete, soil, and asbestos can be melted down, reducing its volume by approximately one-fifth.👍 KHNP conducted a demonstration test using approximately 4.9 tons of simulated non-radioactive waste from 2022 to the end of June this year, achieving a maximum continuous operation of 140 hours and a cumulative operation of 2,083 hours. This is the first time in the domestic radioactive waste treatment field that a plasma treatment facility has operated for over 2,000 hours. We plan to continue verifying the plasma treatment technology to ensure the stability of key facilities and secure commercialization technology. Through this, we aim to apply it to the decommissioning of Kori Unit 1 and Wolsong Unit 1, ensuring the stable management of radioactive waste generated from nuclear power plants, as well as making efforts to enter the overseas market.
