I'm spending this Friday morning reading through a needs assessment report that just got finalized for 5 different health facilities in Zambia. Infant and maternal mortality rates remain high in developing countries - here is one basic reason why. This particular hospital in #Zambia that our needs assessment expert visited has a paucity of hospital beds in the maternal ward - as a result, many of the female patients with their babies have to use mattresses on the floor. The report also mentions lack of ultrasounds, delivery surgical instruments, incubators, baby cribs etc...the list goes on. We live in a world of staggering inequities - in the healthcare space, Project C.U.R.E.'s work tries to tackle these head-on. This particular facility will receive a shipment of medical supplies and equipment thanks to a corporate partner which will hopefully help shore up existing resources and enable this facility to provide better care to their patients. The recent government report on child poverty (based on the 2022 Living Conditions Monitoring Survey) in Zambia reveals alarming statistics. With 6.6 million Zambian children (70.6%) experiencing multidimensional poverty, urgent action is required to improve their well-being. Key findings include: High Multidimensional Poverty: Over two-thirds of Zambian children suffer from deprivations in two or more dimensions of well-being simultaneously. This situation demands immediate attention. Urban-Rural Disparities: Rural children are disproportionately affected, with only about 13.2% who are not experiencing multidimensional poverty compared to over half of urban children. The Western Province stands out as an area with particularly high child poverty rates. Risk Factors: Children from uneducated households and female-headed households face higher risks. Those with multiple risk factors are especially vulnerable. Trends Since 2015: Child poverty rates have increased, especially in urban areas. Health-related deprivations and limited access to information contribute to this rise. Gender Disparities: Girls are worse off than boys, and children in female-headed households have seen a sharper increase in multidimensional poverty. This calls for targeted policies, improved access to healthcare, education, and information, and collaborative efforts to break intergenerational poverty.

Child domestic work is estimated to be the second largest contributor to child labour in Kenya after agriculture, with its prevalence fuelled by the invisible nature of children subjected to exploitative work in private homes. Today marks World Suicide Prevention Day, an important occasion to raise awareness about mental health as a critical humanitarian issue. At the Humanitarian Information Facilitation Centre (HIFC), we recognize the urgent need to address rising suicide rates in Zimbabwe and globally, driven by economic hardship, stigma, and inadequate support. Each suicide is not just a statistic; it represents lost potential and dreams. As humanitarians, we must prioritize mental health alongside physical health. The need to do more on nodding syndrome: Cause of the #syndrome remain unknown Despites the different strides by Government of Uganda to support children living with nodding syndrome in Northern Uganda, there's a great imbalance especially in the aspects of socio - economic aspects. The over 1,000 survivors of the nodding syndrome are at the brink of starvation, poor infrastructures (housing facilities), no descent clothing, and beddings, etc. Essentially, parents or caregivers especially women do not do anything else daily as they need to pay close attention to the survivors. There are high chances for survivors hurting themselves during the time of the seizure. Support like: Emergency food support, psychosocial support, clothing, bedding and renovation of the infrastructures (housing), beddings, Menstrual health kits for the girls, offering training for the youth (survivors of the syndrome) is critical. Also, economic empowerment and livelihoods of the caregivers especially women, can help the family to become self reliant.
