Fresh and Aspiring CPL Holders – Always have a Plan B (Part 1) The allure of flying is real and to certain extent rightly so. After all, as Captain you have crisp uniform with a flight bag, high 6 figure salary, travel/stay which is paid for, have an own house, respectable if not a fancy car/bike, people looking at you with awe at the airports and lastly a pair of RAY-BAN AVIATORS sunglasses which is essentially for aviators( civil or military). So to become a commercial pilot is your plan A. But the point to keep in mind is that this is not the starting point but an aim which will take time to be accomplished.  And therefore, the need to have a plan B. So many people, aspiring pilots and parents, are confused and I do get lot of messages and calls with everyone wanting to know WHEN, WHERE and HOW of doing a CPL and more importantly what happens after doing a CPL. What will be penned down is essentially for average middle income group families with not so large a corpus available and more importantly with no connections in aviation industry. It is NOT for the for the privileged who can get into airlines a day after getting a CPL with family claim. I will try and chart a pathway for freshers both aspiring and current over next few days depending on time available to me from flying. It is very likely that you may read what is contrary to your expectations but that will be because I will not sugar coat anything – After all it is your future and lot of hard earned money at stake. The aim is to give you a perspective and after that it is each individuals call because life is not black and white but in-numerable shades of GREY. Before you buy, find out how much the aircraft will cost. According to some experts, the owner's decision on the price and the broker's commission between the seller and the buyer are the only factors that can affect an aircraft's price. Because there is no clear benchmark for aeroplane prices, "broker chains" frequently use them as targets to raise prices above those set by aircraft owners. Though most individuals desire to "get rich quick," which is why they never succeed even once, aircraft broking is a noble profession with "pride" and the potential for great financial gain. The process listed below helps brokers estimate the price of an aeroplane so that they are prepared to tell potential purchasers that the amount they are paying originates from "long broker chains" or/and from the "direct owner/mandated broker/seller" when they receive a sales bid. Sample Case: Need to know: 1. YOM: 2008-2010 (16 Years), used Aircaft with CFM 56 Engines 2. Standard Airframe Depreciation: 6.25%-10% (5 -15 Years); 3% - 5% (15 - 30 years) 3. Remaining Engine Cycles: 2000 Cycles Per Engine 4. Price when the aircraft is “Brand New”: USD$65,000,000 Airframe Value: 6,25% x 65,000,000 = 4,064,500 Engine Values: 2000 x 2 x 1000 = 4,000,000 Engines value per Cycle: Depends on Engine Type So the basic price of an aircraft with "as is where is" condition (2000 cycles engine remaining) and airframe condition that has used tens of thousands of flying hours is: USD $ 8,000,000, but some Owners are still willing to offer their assets with a tolerance of 20%++ to USD $10,000,000. The mandated broker, authorized seller or aircraft acquisition company will resell it at a price of USD $ 12,500,000 which will be the "Market Price" with a tolerance of USD $ 300,000 - USD $ 500,000 which is acceptable. However, if the price soars far from this estimate, it is certain that there are "broker chains" in it so that the plane will be very difficult to sell.
