Reflections. I've been reflecting on recent conversations with colleagues and partners about the quality of our work and the lasting impressions we create with the resources available. In humanitarian and development work, the resources provided by donors are sufficient to bring about necessary changes. However, we often find ourselves in the same situation or even worse. Instead of lifting communities out of their current conditions, we tend to create more dependency. So, what is our mantra for quality and life-changing programming? Can we propose more robust and budget-conscious interventions that prepare the people we support to be more resilient and capable of taking charge of their lives after our response? I believe we need to rethink our approaches and engage in more introspective conversations to change the trajectory of our current offerings in both humanitarian and development efforts. Let's aim to create sustainable impact and truly empower the communities we serve. #HumanitarianWork #Development #Sustainability #Empowerment #QualityProgramming

Reproductive health program resilience and preparedness remain underfunded, under appreciated, and misunderstood. ALL RH programs need to evaluate their vulnerability to disruption, not just those working in fragile settings. And yet this work continues to fall into the gap between development and humanitarian programs. Kudos to those who continue to address this persistent challenge. Uganda humanitarian landscape is a hybrid of both acute and protracted refugee situations, hosting approximately 1.7 million refugees from neighbouring countries, with a majority from the neighbouring South Sudan. While the number of refugees has gradually increased, humanitarian funding has gradually decreased, and as a result, there is limited funding for critical support in food, education, water sanitation and hygiene. According to Sida, nearly half of the children are malnutrition as a result of both general food assistance and reduced preventative health and nutrition intervention due to.. you guessed right.. reduced funding! While hailed as a champion of the Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework (CRRF) and having enabling policies, and tangible development funding, there seems to be a slow transition from short-term life-saving to medium- and longer-term resilience support for the protracted refugee population. The policy-practice dissonance is loud, and gaping. I believe that the key to supporting particularly protracted refugees is unlocking their potential and equipping them to become self-reliant.

Weak legal systems and lack of education further fuel this crisis. Today, Collective Aid joins a coalition of humanitarian operations in Calais, calling on the French state to act on its promises. Despite commitments made in 2023 by the French government to ensure water and sanitation for displaced people in northern France, we have seen no change. The situation in Calais is worsening. Access to water and sanitation is essential to human dignity and health, yet people on the move are forced to drink from contaminated sources, make do without toilets, and endure unsafe conditions every day. Our open letter gives our urgent recommendations for change and demands immediate action. This is an much needed interesting initiative and I am glad that’s it’s coming from a peace building perspective. I find the way partnerships are dealt with in Afghanistan, top down with colonial undertones. Most international organisations have policies in place that disallows Afghans being recruited in leadership positions. Despite being part of aid mechanisms for the last 70 years, Afghans are still seen as incapable of leading in the sector. When will be we be deemed to have enough experience and skills to lead????? We are having to work in English. There’s a huge gap between the richness of knowledge and discussions in local languages and what gets translated into English to develop programs. The people with most power in the aid community do not have the language skills to understand the locals. This also forces the best of us locals into powerless translator and mistrusted interlocutor roles rather than actual leaders. There’s a huge mistrust of local NGOs. Only the most compliant ones are partnered with. Technical capacity is raised but innovation, genuine social change, pushing the boundaries is punished and seen as locals overstepping their boundaries. This is why the huge investment in human rights, advocacy, social change partnerships failed during the republic. They failed to change attitudes, and they failed to create strong local institutions. This is why the entire industry collapsed when the republic collapsed. This is why we don’t have enough social movements with leaders that we could rely on and instead have huge number of performative activism from afar in a foreign language while people suffer. The whole partnership modality is here is based on ensuring compliance, delivery rather than innovation, short term projects rather than social change.
