Today is the #DAC2024. Together with other child protection actors, we organized a procession in Moyale township, celebrating the African Child. Children expressed their views through poems and songs, urging an end to harmful traditional practices to stakeholders, including community members, elders, parents, and teachers, reflecting on today's theme, "Education for all children in Africa: The time is now." At SNDAFRICA we remain committed to safeguarding and empowering of children. Our dedicated efforts in child protection have reached 30,000 community members and 10,000 school pupils through awareness campaigns against harmful practices, child right clubs in schools, hygiene promotion activities and linking survivors of HTP and child trafficking to safe spaces. We have also successfully reunited over 200 children with their families, provided dignity kits to 10,000 girls, and essential supplies to 2,100 boys. Together, we can create a lasting impact and secure the well-being of every child. Happy Day of the African Child! We're excited to share the 2024 report "Rapid Gender Analysis and Protection Assessment of Drought Situation in Marsabit County." This study, funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade done in partnership with @Oxfam in Kenya, explores the gender dynamics and protection issues caused by severe drought in Marsabit County. It highlights the impact on different gender groups and offers recommendations for a gender-sensitive humanitarian response. The report covers demographics, gender roles, access to resources, education, health, WASH during drought, and more. By understanding these gender-specific vulnerabilities, we can develop more effective and inclusive interventions. We are thrilled to announce the successful completion of a two-day training session for members of the Marsabit County Engagement Forum (CEF) on advocating for gender-inclusive policies, guidelines, and decision-making processes. Organized by SND in partnership with the National Counter Terrorism Centre - Kenya (NCTC) and Act Change Transform and with the financial support of GCERF (Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund) , this event introduced the Gender Pillar as a stand-alone focus among the five existing pillars: Education, Law Enforcement, Economic, Ideological, and Media, with ambitious objectives now part of the draft Marsabit County Action Plan (MCAP) to be achieved by December 2024. The training covered essential topics such as radicalization steps, the role of women in Prevention and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE), gender mainstreaming strategies, and the intersection of religion with gender issues and constitutional provisions. Additionally, CEF members learned to use the Fusion system, a robust Monitoring & Evaluation tool for implementation of County Action Plans (CAPs). We are proud of the progress made and remain committed to promoting women's representation and influence within CEF structure. At SND, the safety and well-being of our employees are paramount. That's why we've organized comprehensive Fire Safety Training sessions to empower our team with essential skills and knowledge to prevent fires, ensure workplace safety, and comply with fire safety regulations. Our training covers a wide range of topics including evacuation procedures, fire prevention techniques, firefighting methods, and practical fire drills. By equipping our staff with these critical skills, we're creating a safer workplace environment for everyone. Our hearts go out to those affected by the devastating floods and landslides in Kenya, which have claimed 210 lives since March, displacing hundreds of thousands. The impact extends beyond borders. Torrential rain has left homes, roads, and bridges in ruins, posing threats to livelihoods and public health. But amidst the crisis, SND, in collaboration with Plan International Kenya and Marsabit County Public Health Department, has conducted hygiene awareness sessions in seven flood-affected villages across Moyale and Sololo sub-counties, reaching 1,050 individuals. Our goal is to empower communities with essential knowledge and tools to combat public health risks. Participants also received crucial WASH items like mosquito nets, multipurpose bar soap, and water purification chemicals. On March 25th, 2024, SND hosted a vital dissemination event showcasing the findings of a research conducted for the "Child Protection through Capacity Building, Transformation of Social Norms, and Strengthening of Protection Mechanisms in Northern Kenya" project. The research, focused on child trafficking and unsafe migration between Kenya and Ethiopia, which was conducted in late 2023. The meeting gathered key stakeholders including H.E. Solomon Gubo Deputy Governor of Marsabit County, the County Secretary, The Executive Director of SND, Children's Officer, the magistrate of the Moyale Law Courts, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), local administration and other key relevant stakeholders from both sides of the Moyale Kenya/Ethiopia border. The dissemination report on child trafficking and unsafe migration between Kenya and Ethiopia, was conducted by Terre des Hommes Netherlands in Africa through PARS Research and was funded by Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through terre des hommes Deutschland e.V., and is being implemented by Strategies for Northern Development. The dissemination report served to raise awareness, facilitate dialogue and mobilize action among key stakeholders to address the pressing issue of child trafficking and unsafe migration between Kenya and Ethiopia, particularly within the Moyale Sub-County region. The report presented findings regarding the prevalence and patterns of child trafficking and unsafe migration in the region. This included data on the number of children affected, common trafficking routes, transit points and destination areas. It also highlighted specific challenges faced by children during the migration process. The dissemination report aimed to raise awareness, facilitate dialogue and mobilize action on the critical issue of child trafficking and unsafe migration within the Moyale Sub-County region.
