[Tips from Inc: Understanding “Japanese-made English”💡] 和製英語 (Wasei-eigo), or “Japanese-made English” is a language adapted from English and other languages, but with meanings specific to Japanese culture. These terms might sound familiar to English speakers but often carry entirely different meanings in Japan. Let’s take a look at the examples: 📈コストパフォーマンス (cost performance) : Refers to the value or efficiency in relation to the cost, similar to "cost-effectiveness" in English. It is often abbreviated as コスパ (Cospa). 💻テレワーク (telework) : Refers to remote work or working from home, aligning with the concept of telecommuting. While the term exists in English, it's more commonly used in Japan. 🗣️マンツーマン (man to man) : Refers to one-on-one interactions, like tutoring or coaching, without the confrontational tone it might suggest in English. It’s used broadly for any personalized event. While these terms may have originated from English, they've evolved to have unique meanings in Japan. Yesterday, I had dinner with members of the Kumamoto Association in Taiwan, and we reminisced about common expressions from the Showa era. One of them was "ハナキン" (Hanakin), meaning "Flower Friday," which described Friday nights as vibrant as flowers. Back then, areas like Roppongi, Ginza, and Shinjuku were bustling with activity. However, with the bursting of the economic bubble, Japan entered a long period of recession. Now, Japan shows signs of a resurgence, and we hope to celebrate vibrant Friday nights once again. Looking ahead, Japan's wealth distribution may change. Those who understand financial investments will see their wealth grow compared to those who keep their money in banks. Overseas investors are becoming active in buying Japanese stocks again. In the first week of July, net purchases of stock index futures reached 881 billion yen, the second highest this year. With strong expectations for a US interest rate cut in September, long-term funds such as pensions are beginning to flow into the Japanese stock market. The Nikkei 225 closed at 42,224 points, rising 1,443 points over three trading days. Shinji Ogawa, Co-Head of Equities at JPMorgan Securities, noted that overseas pension funds are increasing their holdings of Japanese stocks based on long-term investments. The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board also plans to increase its investment in Japanese stocks. Short-term investors' covering purchases have also driven the market up. The risk remains that growth momentum is overly concentrated, and the global economy's dependence on the US needs to be watched. Now, let's look at international trends. The NATO summit was held in Washington, DC, where the leaders' declaration explicitly mentioned ongoing support for Ukraine for the first time and emphasized that Ukraine's path to NATO membership is irreversible. The declaration also expressed strong concern about China, urging it to stop supporting Russia. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida highlighted at the meeting that Japan would provide $67 million to support Ukraine's air defense systems and plans to strengthen measures against disinformation.

My first Tabelog review! While the influence of Tabelog has waned a bit in recent years, it's still an important source of restaurant information for people in their 30s-50s in Japan. I'm lucky that the first review is positive, and acknowledges that we're still experimenting a bit to figure things out. I had been worried about launching without having nailed down the menu, and even my bread is still changing a bit daily as I try to understand the effect of dozens of variables on the final products. A non-Japanese co-founder of a famous chain of restaurants in Japan told me that launching here is painful because you have to be "perfect" right out of the gate. But my neighborhood denizens seem supportive and maybe even a little excited to be part of my early, experimental stages. I don't have the budget to refine endlessly without customer feedback, so I'm doing this much the same way I build software: try something. Assess it. Get it mostly working. And then refine it. I'm hoping Mizonokuchi continues to embrace my forever-wakaba (beginner) mindset. Pretty much every day I open my sales are better than the last time, and word of mouth is spreading quickly, and I've already got repeat customers that come at least once a week. I still need to triple or quadruple daily sales for this to become a real business, but as of yesterday I have already pretty much met my daily sales goals for November, so if I can expand that a tiny bit I might blow past the numbers I was originally worried were a bit optimistic.

Some newer Chinese language videos sometimes won't have subtitles, like this Cantonese music video by 洪嘉豪 (Hung Kaho) https://lnkd.in/gwffmSGz Or even older videos will never have them: https://lnkd.in/gdVzGzhD This is very tricky as it gates the ability to properly consume the content until you're a lot further into your language learning journey. By extracting these embedded subtitles, you can generate subtitles with better accessibility alongside Pinyin or Jyutping romanisation. This is just in the MVP stage, but it's already showing a lot of promise!

Japanese proverb: 七転び八起き Nanakorobi yaoki It’s a motivational proverb that translates to: Fall down seven times, get up eight times. Now, if you want to use this somewhere like in a speech, you need to be ready because there will always be the kinds of you who need to scrutinize everything. “Wait, if you fell seven times… wouldn’t you get up seven times, too?” And then you’ll be like, “STOP BEING CORRECT. I didn’t come up with the proverb. People apparently didn’t learn math in ancient times!” You don’t want to be defending yourself like that. So here are the theories as to why it’s eight not seven: 1. Because someone helped you stand for the first time when you became a toddler. 2.Because in ancient times, seven and eight were used to express large numbers, similar to how we use “like a dozen times!” 3. Because the Kanji character for eight signifies good fortune Of course people in the long past must have noticed that it didn’t make sense logically, but what makes proverbs memorable is sometimes not logic but more the ease of saying it, the rhythmic feel it carries, and the emotional effect it brings ☺️.
