What you see below aren't your ordinary cables — they are lines of relief for millions in Sudan facing conflict and severe food insecurity. Last week, WFP and the Emergency Telecommunications Cluster activated this undersea cable network, bringing stable and secure connectivity to those working tirelessly to deliver life-saving support. The cable network — supplied by Sudatel Telecom Group, Ltd — begins off the Sudanese coast and will stretch thousands of kilometers underground, connecting key sites across the country. 🇸🇩 It will enable fast, coordinated responses in some of the most challenging conditions imaginable, including cash-based transfers to families on the brink. 💳 Connectivity is the backbone of humanitarian work. Since April 2023, when widespread conflict severely damaged vital telecommunications infrastructure, access to reliable connectivity has been scarce. This milestone marks a crucial step forward, giving humanitarians the tools they need to keep delivering — no matter what. 💪🏾 Watch this space for more updates on this transformative achievement. 📺

One of the best ways to foster long-term resilience? Empower nations to lead their own response. ✅ A key approach is providing flexible digital tools 🤳 and assistance that enable governments to tailor support to their people's unique cultures and needs. With these resources, they can: 🎯 Deliver support in the most effective and context-specific ways 🤝🏾 Foster greater trust and transparency within communities 💪🏾 Reduce long-term dependency on external assistance 📊 Promote accountability and good governance Earlier this month, I had the privilege to witness this work in action in #Lesotho 🇱🇸. Since 2022, WFP has been collaborating with the government to strengthen its capacity to monitor and respond to critical national issues. With the government and other partners, we've set up automated weather stations ☁ and high-performance computing systems 🖥️ that help us accurately monitor the weather and predict seasonal changes, allowing for better planning and preparedness. We've also developed a national geospatial platform 📈 that integrates diverse data layers —including weather data, high-resolution satellite imagery, and 3D elevation models — to enable informed decision-making and more accurate and targeted policymaking to strengthen food systems. 🌾 Looking ahead, WFP is committed to empowering the next generation with the digital skills necessary to support learning 📚 and foster greater national engagement. Thank you to the team in Lesotho for your warm welcome, dedication, and excellence. And to the government of Lesotho—thank you for your ongoing collaboration and support. Let's build a future where every nation has the tools to chart its path to resilience, fueled by the strength, innovation, and spirit of its people.
