Five priorities to make Italy a hydrogen hub Interview with Aurelio Regina, Energy Delegate and Chairman of the Confindustria Energy Technical Group To make Italy a hydrogen hub and overcome existing critical issues, action must be taken in five areas: support research; promote the production of hydrogen and its derivatives and stimulate demand for hydrogen and its derivatives. Legislative and regulatory shortcomings must also be addressed, authorisation procedures streamlined and information asymmetries eliminated to promote a culture of hydrogen, overcoming ideological approaches such as those often encountered for the different colours of hydrogen.

Industry has always been defined, in the #dualuse context, as the First Line of Defence. Quite recently, during an important conference in Milan, I added to such definition, the one of #Industry as Part of the #Enforcement system. This can be especially applicable when dealing with #Russia #sanctions due to the very high risk of circumvention of the #restrictivemeasures adopted by EU and #G7 countries (and not only...). We do hope in a more and more strict cooperation between industry and national authorities responsible for implementing and enforcing the current #restrictive #measures

This facilitated the compilation of a contact list comprising 226 colleagues, ensuring stakeholders were informed of the impending situation. Everbridge's Emergency Mass Notification capabilities, alligned with Orbit informations, enabled targeted communication tailored to recipient types, enhancing efficacy. Special Economic Zones (#ZES) can offer a series of tools to address and overcome the social and economic problems that affect the less developed areas of the country. In the case of southern Italy, the creation of a #OneStopDigitalShop (#SUD) – provided for by the legislation that accompanied the establishment of the single Zes – is the answer to this need, aiming to significantly reduce the time and complexity of bureaucratic procedures for businesses, taking full advantage of the advantages of standardization of procedures. To implement the counter provided for the single Zes, the legislator has chosen to rely on the expertise gained by the Chamber System in the management of the Impresa in un giorno platform. Created by InfoCamere - the company of the Chambers of Commerce for digital innovation - with the coordination of Unioncamere - Unione italiana delle Camere di commercio, industria, artigianato e agricoltura the platform plays the role of a single access portal to all the services provided by the Italian Public Administration to businesses, in relation to the establishment of a company. With regard to the functioning of the Single Desk for #ProductiveActivities, it guarantees the standardized management of administrative procedures for all those municipalities (over half of the total) that have chosen to entrust the management of their Suap to the Chambers of Commerce on the basis of a specific agreement or by delegation. Since the beginning of its activity in 2011, the portal has managed a growing number of online practices that today exceeds 6 million. Starting from this consolidated experience, the #SingleDigitalDesk for the single Zes is therefore presented as a single interface already structured between businesses and the various public administrations involved in the management of the Zes. Our partners from CNR, Catania, Italy shed some more light to the Italian tale of the EU #WBG Pilotline. Fascinating story of rapid development 👏 ! Tranlation by ChatGPT: Five years ago, with the support of the Sicilian Regional Department of Productive Activities, the Ministry of Education, University, and Research (MUR), and the Ministry of the South, I launched the Beyond-Nano project. The aim was to equip the country with a single-site infrastructure that would operate in a specific segment of the microelectronics sector, focusing on applications based on wide-bandgap emerging semiconductors. In that segment, we had gained significant visibility, both scientifically and technologically, thanks to research conducted at the University of Catania and the Institute for Microelectronics and Microsystems of the National Research Council (CNR). Beyond-Nano has become a wonderful reality, featuring state-of-the-art equipment for processing and advanced analysis of prototype devices in silicon carbide and gallium nitride, as well as for the integration of 2D materials on these semiconductors. The next challenge was to tackle a new and more daunting goal: to compete in the European Chips Act with giants like Leti, IMEC, and Fraunhofer. Initially, the Commission's strategy included only three Pilot Lines, conducted by Leti, IMEC, and Fraunhofer. The issue of new semiconductors was left out. The same Italian scientific community was resigned, not believing it possible to change the Commission's stance. Thanks to the extraordinary results achieved by IMM in the field and the existence of a credible and competitive infrastructure like Beyond-Nano, the interactions I was engaged in with all industry stakeholders (STMicroelectronics, Intel, Infineon, Soitec, GlobalWafers, Lam Research, as well as Leti, IMEC, Fraunhofer, European Universities and Research Centers, etc.) were successful. By the end of November last year, the European Commission decided to include the implementation of a fourth pilot line on wide-bandgap semiconductors in the Chips Act. The support from our Ministries MIMIT, MEF, and MUR was crucial for the success of this operation. It was a great team effort! The rest is recent history, the executive project led by CNR was highly praised. Now begins the construction of a facility that will place us among the top international microelectronics centers, right here in Italy, right in Catania, in Etna Valley. The local ecosystem (University, CNR, Industry) will respond very effectively. I am thrilled!

Enrico Letta - President of the Jacques Delors Institute, just published for the European Council an independent High-Level Report on the future of the European Single Market. It mentions the EU Science, Research and Innovation of the European Commission, Joint Research Centre (JRC) and makes direct reference to our report "Quantifying the Benefits of Location Interoperability in the European Union" - https://lnkd.in/dME-64A8. The report points out that "full interoperability could boost EU GDP by 0.4% and would increase the number of citizens using online public services by 15%. It would also help citizens save up to 24 million hours per year – representing monetary savings of €543 million – and businesses up to €30 billion hours per year – translating into cost savings of €568 billion" (p.95).
