I developed my Degree Dissertation entitled “Project of diffractive optics for partially coherent light” during a one-year co-operation period with Seima Italiana S.p.A.’s plant in Tolmezzo. During that period I worked with the Institute of Solid State Electronics (IESS) of the National Council of Research (CNR), which realized by electron beam lithography the optics I had designed.

Just over two weeks ago, European regulation UE 2019/2144 came into force, mandating advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) on all cars for sale, marking a significant leap in automotive safety and technology. In an interview with Il Sole 24 Ore our Innovation Manager, Marco Bazzani, highlighted the transformative impact of ADAS on driving safety and vehicle performance. The regulation aims to bring vehicles to market that enhance driver and passenger safety by warning of potential dangers, monitoring attention levels, detecting drowsiness, and assessing driving style. This initiative targets zero road deaths by 2050. While ranking ADAS by usefulness is complex due to varying conditions and driving styles, key systems include AEB (automatic emergency braking), ACC (adaptive cruise control), and blind spot monitoring. It is interesting to observe that manufacturers invest on the development of a portfolio of different solutions to reduce their carbon footprint. This enforces the idea that the ecological transition cannot be based on the development of a single technology. In my opinion ICE based and hybrid powertrains can still be a valid alternative, especially through the adoption of innovative layouts and non fossile fuels.
