It is often claimed that the only people who feel strongly about using cash are older. But our new research disproves that. In a study of 5,000 people over six different countries, PayComplete found: •Cash is the preferred form of payment 29% of Generation Z (18 to 24 year-olds) respondents • That’s higher than any other age group - only 55-64 year-olds came close, at 27% • 59% of 18 to 24 year-olds say that they always carry cash, in case of emergencies • That, and the other findings in “Why Won’t Cash Just Die???”, pose some serious challenges to those who are pressing businesses to move away from cash in favour of electronic-only payments. It’s well-known that Germans have a particular attachment to using cash, but what PayComplete’s latest research tells us is that we’re far from being alone in that! In fact, it was the British respondents to our survey who had the strongest emotional reaction to the availability of cash as a payment method (64%) - ahead of Germany (60%) and the USA (50%). And nearly two-thirds of all those surveyed worldwide thought that cash will remain important for the future, with 71% saying that they prefer to use cash when paying smaller businesses, tipping, and paying for personal services - that is, within their own communities. Well done to the PayComplete team and thanks to Sapio Research for putting together our latest report, “Why Won’t Cash Just Die???” The findings give a clear answer: it’s because shoppers, consumers, and communities don’t want it to! And if the customer is always right… What I found especially interesting was the extent to which privacy and concerns about data collection and use associated with card payments and other electronic payments methods: 50% of our 5,000-strong sample said that they feel uncomfortable about the amount of data organisations can access from their shopping choices.
