GREEN HAVEN Location: San Antonio, Texas

This project was heavily inspired by the acequia that runs through a preserved plot of land across from Simon street. The sites topographic landscaping aims to further bring the community together by allowing all of the paths to flow to a central gathering space. It is organized on two axis, one to each of our neighboring sites, all while we use our “walls” of greenery to allow each unit a sense of privacy and scenery.

WINDCATCHER HOUSE Location: San Antonio, Texas

This house located on Simon street is a single family home with large windows, double height rooms and an open concept plan to allow for the space to open up and feel welcoming. With this project, I designed with the intent to bridge indoor and outdoor space to compliment each other, and to allow for passive cooling techniques to counteract the harsh, hot summers of Texas.

The building was designed to fit in its context, both in massing and materials. The materiality of the building takes inspiration from the pearl with the warm brick and dark industrial metals. By breaking up the hostel into two separate masses, it allows for the neighboring sites to not be completely shut out from the view of the pearl and it does not impose itself onto everyone around as much, considering the scale. In addition, the bridges act as both a functional connection and a statement piece that represent the meaning behind the name ‘Unity’ , to be joined as a whole; the same way this hostel will unite those who visit. 24

The pearl brewery is full of life and people from different cultures that are brought together by many different things, but one being the food. There are over two dozen food & drink establishments located inside of the pearl, so I decided to keep the same language and bring it into my design by adding a bakery, coffee shop and a restaurant facing inward to the courtyard. This space is open to the public to allow for the hostel to gain more traction , for visitors to learn about the building and to bring in revenue to fund the events and needs that the hostel might have. THE CAGED LOFTS Location: Brooklyn, New York

To promote excellence in urban infill design; exploring design and construction strategies to inform quality, affordable, smallhome development in vacant sites that are difficult to build upon. Creating a mix-use building within an existing developed neighborhood; bringing together the community with a local hangout spot.

Site Design The site is located in Brooklyn, NY in a vacant lot in between two buildings, which only allows for natural light to be brought in through the north and south facades. Due to the very narrow lot, using the entire space allowed me to maximize the amount of square footage to give the residents an open floor plan, letting light bleed in as much as possible into the different rooms.

Schematic Design The schematic design followed a simple concept of vertical construction that matches the existing surrounding buildings. Designing loft apartments enabled me to create a variation in ceiling heights for the different spaces and having a significant contrast between public and private (public spaces have the double ceiling heights & private spaces have the standard ceiling height).

Material: The front facade skin is perforated metal to create privacy in the residential spaces while also allowing for natural light to bleed into the lofts, creating a unique lighting pattern.

Design Feature: One of my clients main hobbies included reading. So to tend to her lifestyle I created custom built-in reading nooks in every loft, each different in their own way; bookshelves, drawers, and cabinets.

FORKS OF THE ROAD Location: Natchez, Mississippi

A scar symbolizes a rememberance of the pain and suffering the enslaved people endured during times of hardship. The physical and mental abuse carved a scar that will be deeply remembered for generations, and the project has deep cuts that tear into the landscape to represent those scars.

The weathered corten steel walls represent the old blood spilled during those times. When rain falls, the water will spill down the side of the building onto the pavement creating puddles of “old blood”. T he statues of the slaves walking among the memorial were added to bring realness to the experience and to have the visitors immerse themselves into the shoes of those enslaved. They are also covered in corten steel to show how weathered down and beaten up they became throughout the many years of slavery.

B

This exhibit represents the cotton fields that the enslaved people had to work in through rain or shine. We incorporated real dirt into this exhibit along with foot prints engraved into the floor to bring a sense of realness to the space along with facts posted on the podiums about what they went through when working in these fields. Another way we wanted the visitors to grasp the inhumane labor the slaves had to endure is at the end of the ‘field’, there is a stone block that weighs 200 lbs that can be moved, and it represents the amount of cotton each person was forced to pick per day.
