Depression may be the consequence of a complex interplay between cell-mediated-immune activation and inflammation evolving in neuroprogression. Associations between n-3 PUFAs, inflammation, oxidative stress and the risk of depression have been demonstrated and clinical and animal supplementation studies have shown the potential of PUFAs to decrease neurodegeneration and inflammation. Future research should focus on the dynamic interactions between the different cell signaling networks and oxidative and nitrosative stress pathways that cause depression.

The "default mode" has been defined as a baseline condition of brain function and is of interest because its component brain regions are believed to be abnormal in schizophrenia. It was hypothesized that the default mode network (DMN) would show abnormal activation and connectivity in patients with schizophrenia and that it’s alteration is present not only in individuals suffering from chronic schizophrenia but from the first episode (FE) of illness. Our aim was to test hypothesis that DMN may show abnormal spatial and or temporal pattern in patients suffering FE schizophrenia. METHOD AND MATERIALS Ten FE schizophrenics patients (DSM-IV-TR, APA, 2000) with a normal IQ and 14 healthy volunteers matched for age and education, underwent fMRI (GE 1.5T unit), during observation of and pleasant and disgusting vi...
