In order to provide our students with workforce ready skills and better performance in group projects, a regional campus Computer and Informational Technology (CIT) department began implementing Agile across its curriculum. After a visit to a local business who underwent an Agile transformation and is now using Agile for all their teams, they said that understanding the culture of Agile is more important than the practices themselves. Revising our curriculum allows us to give our students the advantage of learning how to be Agile and what it means to thrive in an Agile culture.

After more than two years of study, experimentation, and reflection, this group found that its adaptations of Agile to higher education produced positive outcomes by increasing student engagement, encouraging students to take responsibility for their learning, enhancing the level and quality of collaboration, and producing higher quality deliverables. In this paper we propose an Agile Manifesto for Teaching and Learning that can be used to direct the work of higher education faculty in the classroom and beyond. Second, we describe our diverse experiences incorporating Agile tools and techniques into the classroom. Third, we present the results of a student s...

According to a recent survey (VersionOne, 2019), the top three reasons organizations adopt the agile way of working are to accelerate software delivery (74%), enhance ability to manage changing priorities (62%) and increase productivity (51%). To help mitigate the chaos, stress and anxiety, an agile mindset that welcomes uncertainty, embraces challenges and views failure as a learning opportunity can help us survive, and perhaps even thrive, in our new environment.

This study explores how Agile practices are integrated into an online IT course. We focus on incorporating eight Agile practices (team charters, daily stand-ups, Kanban boards, story cards, MoSCoW, timeboxing, showcases, and retrospectives). Students were surveyed at the end of the course and the results indicate Agile enhanced students’ learning and increased the quality of their final project.

In past semesters, groups usually produced a good final product, but often with much chaos, drama, and intervention from the instructor. We discuss the use of Agile methods to revise the project scaffold in an effort to improve the group project experience for students and instructors. The application of Agile to a wider range of projects also offers an opportunity for computing educators to share their knowledge of Agile with peers in other fields.
