Boring bonds may deliver better than equity over next 2-3 years. Assumptions for base case 1. Corporate ROE and margins have peaked for the cycle, profits allign with Nominal GDP & Revenue growth 2. Nominal GDP growth = 5-6% real growth (last 10 year average at 5.5%) + 3-4% inflation (current run rate of core)= 8-10% 3. Fiscal deficit is shaved off by 50bps further over next 12m. After that same. 4. CAD plateaus (.5-1%) 5. Capex to GDP flatlines at current level. Policy output 1. Real rates drop to zero (RR-core inflation, at 3.5% today) 2. Re-liquify system = RR moves to RRP. System liquidity goes back to +1% Valuation output 1. Equity valuation mean reverts to LT average (18x over forward earnings) 2. 10 year IGB gets to 100bps over overnight funding rate. Risk In the interim, USD strengthens. Very important to highlight the flaws in Sovereign ratings, and any positive change in these ratings can have immediate and far reaching impact on countries like #India. IPO Season is Back The next two months are going to be busy for India's securities market, as more than two dozen companies are planning to file their initial public offers (IPOs). They aim  to raise more than Rs 30,000 crore in aggregate. With PM Modi's third term and continuation of business friendly policies including Startup India, Invest India, Make in India, PLI Schemes, reduction in regulatory compliance burden, etc., foreign companies are incentivized to expand their India operations and domestic companies are eager to be listed on our stock exchanges. Many companies are now shifting their domicile back to India, like Zepto, which is also preparing for its IPO next year. It is also seen that companies with good ESG ratings are valued more during their Initial Public Offerings (IPOs). Investors are willing to pay a premium for companies demonstrating strong ESG commitments, anticipating lower risks and sustainable growth. ESG-friendly companies often see higher demand for their shares. Institutional investors, particularly those managing ESG-focused funds, are more likely to participate in their IPO, driving up demand and potentially leading to a higher initial stock price. I have written in detail about it in my article in BW Business World (bit.ly/3Xi8s21) As companies launch IPOs, it is also advisable to perform necessary due diligence, update legal and regulatory status, government approvals (pending or sought) etc. in the prospectus. A company should try to resolve disputes, recover damages and conclude their part of legal or regulatory roles in a litigation, arbitration or any other dispute. So, Navdeep Singh just won gold for India in the javelin throw at the Paralympics in Paris. Huge moment, right? But what really hit me were his words after the win: “We should get the same respect as everyone, and my aim is to educate the world that we also exist and should not be considered lesser than anyone." When he says "we," he’s talking about all the Paralympic athletes who’ve fought against the odds to stand on that global stage. Here’s the thing: Everyone’s got their own mix of abilities and disabilities. For some, it’s out there in the open, for others, it’s not as obvious. But does that make anyone lesser than anyone else? Nope. These athletes, whether they’re taking home medals or just showing up and competing at this level, are the real deal. They’re not just in it for fitness (though that’s a plus), they’re showing us that sports can be a career—a damn respectable one at that. But let’s be honest. We, the so-called passionate fans, go wild when the cricket team comes back with a trophy—blocking roads, lighting fireworks, you name it. Yet, when these Paralympic medalists return, they get... a bouquet and maybe a handshake at the airport? (Come on, really?) We need to change this. These athletes are idols in every sense of the word. They’ve put in the hard work, they’ve battled through challenges most of us can’t even imagine, and they’ve come out on top. It’s time we stop giving them just a polite round of applause and start giving them the respect and recognition they truly deserve. I think this is also an opportunity for startups to bring all these athletes close to their fans through a fan engagement platform. Making Sense Of India’s Micro VC Boom #microVCfunds #earlystage #funding #indiagrowthstory Micro VC funds have a small corpus and focus on early-stage investments. Number of new funds in India has seen an exponential growth over the past three years, and a lot of the activity is geared towards the early stage, where micro VC funds have become a distinct category similar to angel funds. In 2024, more than two dozen new early-stage micro VC funds (under $60 Mn in corpus) launched with a total corpus of well over half a billion dollars. In 2022, out of the 126 funds, 62% were focused on early-stage startups, while in 2023, active Indian VCs launched 31 early stage funds with a total corpus of $1.8 Bn.

LIC vs ASECO: Who is right and who is wrong? ✅ After a brief lull, the @LICIndiaForever — the country’s largest insurance company — has renewed its legal battle against ACESO, a lesser-known firm, founded with the stated aim of ‘monetising’ the assets of LIC policyholders. ✅On August 13, LIC issued advertisements in national dailies seeking to caution policyholders against assigning their policies to third parties (such as ACESO). ✅At the heart of the ‘battle’ is the concept of policy assignment, which allows policyholders to transfer their rights and benefits under the policy to an ‘assignee’, which in this case will be a trust established by ACESO. ✅Instead of surrendering — terminating before maturity for reduced payouts — their policies to LIC, ACESO’s offering allows them to assign their policies to the trust, in return for a payout equal to the surrender value they would have received from LIC, as per the firm's website. ✅LIC maintains that the act falls under the realm of ‘trading of policies’, which is not permissible under law. Sharp questions NISHA PODDAR and sensible answers from one of the most under-stated investors (with a stellar track record) Mukul Arora 👏 Elevation Capital have indeed set a high bar for private markets investing in India. No surprise that they are loved by founders, LP's and other stakeholders. At WaterBridge Ventures have had the privilege of working with #ElevationCapital on several company building journeys and it has been a lot of learning and fun. As Mukul said, fundamentally it's about backing high quality founders & companies, looking for the right levers (innovation vs. profitability depending on the stage), and re-tooling, evolving investment strategies as market structures and business models of success change in a fast evolving market like 🇮🇳. He makes it sound so simple. But it is - just the discipline of doing it repeatedly isn’t, that requires a different order of effort and skill. And that also separates the Midas touch investors from the common ones. Icing on the cake that #ElevationCapital folks are also as humble as they come 🎉

📢 Peak XV Partners, ChrisCapital sheds stake in Awfis Peak XV Partners, earlier known as Sequoia India, sold shares worth Rs 253 crore in the IPO. Before the issue, it held a 22% stake. It will see returns of almost 3X on the seven-year-old bet, where its average investment price was Rs 136 per share. Peak XV had also sold shares of about Rs 40 crore just before the issue. The shares of co-working space provider Awfis debuted on the National Stock Exchange on Thursday, May 30, climbing 10% post-listing to Rs 419. PROFITING OFF BANKRUPTCY: Private Equity Playbook In BYJU'S CASE private equity firms want it to fail, or at least go bankrupt, to get rid of unwanted debts. And here, private equity’s true advantage—its ability to navigate the bankruptcy code. Bankruptcy is an opaque, enormously complex process and one where great lawyering (though not necessarily great business acumen) is rewarded. Private equity firms thrive in this part of the law, and they have certainly been rewarded. History has it. This is akin to ManorCare's fate when Carlyle pushed it to bankruptcy. Everyone made money. Founder. Investors. BYJU'S has no option but to go this path for the founder and board to win. They already made money in this game with the founder sipping juice from an umbrella straw and his PR team putting in all the effort in media to make him look like a saint.
