Product Manager Interview - Can you talk about your experience at your current company? #TheArtofStorytelling Whenever I ask this question, I mostly get answers along the lines of - I did this and that - I improved metrics by this much - The company is in this space and it grew by this much when I was there While there is nothing wrong in talking about what you did, your impact, and the company, it is not clear enough. The interviewer cannot understand your impact clearly with these explanations. Basically, there is no impressive story here - No details about the ruins, hero entry, action/love/emotional scenes, and a powerful climax how the hero solved it all 😉 Some interviewers probe more but some move on resulting in you losing an opportunity to talk about your most recent accomplishments. So, here is a template I have developed over time that will surely make an impact: 1. What does the company or product or team do? (Add details of # of employees, revenues, etc., as required) 2. At what point did you join the company? What were their goals? 3. What is the state they are in now? 4. What is your role in taking the company from point #2 to point #3? Here is a sample: The (target market) work like this and have these (pain points). So, we developed a platform to solve them. I joined this startup as the first PM when there was an alpha product with no customers and a small team. In its current state after a few years, we have gained 100+ global giants as our customers and the team has grown 10x. As it is a startup, I played multiple roles on top of being a PM and worked closely with the Founder. Why such an answer will work?  1. As a good PM, you start with the pain points and then talk about how your solution solves them. If you are in a complicated or niche space, you should simplify this to the interviewer. The interviewer must understand this to understand your contribution. 2. Highlights - Startup, first PM, no customers, small team. It is clear that there is no escape from the responsibilities and the pressure to deliver. This adds to the context. 3. Add details as required to make the current state clear. 4. Highlights - Working with founder, multiple roles. You identify as someone who can work with stakeholders directly doing whatever is required to make the product a success. Note: 1. Have a shorter version of this story and mention that you are keeping it short specifically and would be happy to elaborate as required. 2. This template can be used when asked about work experience in general as well. If you have worked only in a couple of companies, you can repeat this template. But if you have worked in more, use this template for the top 1-2 most impactful roles after giving a summary. #productmanagement #productinterviews

Aspiring PMs or those just starting their careers, this one's for you. Ever wondered what the most important trait you must have is? I recently came across an insightful webinar by PM School featuring Shailesh Hegde, VP of Product and Design at Hubilo. The session was all about that crucial trait—the "Right Mindset." While skills can be learned along the way, it's the right mindset that truly paves the way. I could relate to most of the points he covered. Here are my takeaways: 1. 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗣𝗠'𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺. And in a startup, every other team’s problem becomes your problem too. It’s all part of the fun! 2. 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹, 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗱𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗼𝘀. Trust me, you might find yourself practicing meditation soon! 😜 3. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀, 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿. There will be times you feel like running away, but just breathe—this is a normal part of our lives now. 😅 4. 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁. Taking charge and being accountable make all the difference. 5. 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗶𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝘂𝗽 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘁. It’s okay not to know everything. Learning from your team and working together is essential. 6. 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀. Fail fast and learn fast—better than not learning at all. 7. 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝗶𝘀𝗲. Learn to identify the key insights among the multitude of opinions. 8. ✨ Do You Actually Need to Be a User to Become a Great Product Manager? ✨ As a product manager, I often hear, "To build great products, you must be the user." While this seems logical on the surface, is it a necessary requirement? Let’s take an example from the movie Padman 📽 . Arunachalam Muruganantham, the real-life hero behind the story, didn’t start out with a deep personal experience of menstrual hygiene challenges. But his empathy, curiosity, and dedication to solving a problem he didn’t directly face helped millions of women in rural India gain access to affordable sanitary products. Muruganantham’s brilliance as a “product manager” didn’t stem from being a user himself, but from being deeply empathetic to the user’s struggles. He went the extra mile — putting himself in uncomfortable situations, even testing prototypes on himself — to understand the real pain points. His success lay not in his experience as a user, but in his relentless empathy, curiosity, and commitment to a solution. In my own journey as a product manager, I’ve realized the same. While I may not always be the direct user of every product I work on, I’ve learned that you don’t have to walk in the user’s shoes 👞 ; you just need to care deeply about where those shoes take them. For instance, when I worked on an AI-driven medication 💊 adherence tracking app, I wasn’t the target user. But I knew that elderly patients and caregivers needed more than just medication reminders 🎗 . They needed something personal, reliable, and effortless. I started by having conversations with my own grandparents 🧓 and family friends, many of whom were juggling multiple medications and health conditions. I then spent hours conducting interviews with other elderly patients and caregivers, truly listening to their stories and struggles. Their voices echoed the concerns of my own loved ones ❤️ , and that’s what fueled my drive to build something meaningful. Their challenges became the heartbeat of the product, and every piece of feedback helped shape a solution that wasn’t just functional but truly helpful. The heart of product management is problem-solving. Whether or not you’re the user yourself, if you can immerse yourself in their world, understand their challenges, and design solutions that make their lives easier, you're doing the job well. I wrote 'What is Product Management?' on a chart paper and stuck it on my PG's wall when I joined as an APM. I was talking about this topic with a close friend who also visited that time so thought to write and share it as well. #weeklyPMlogs How would I define it today - A person who owns improving and maintaining a given software offering by building new offerings/features and improving existing ones with the end goal of increasing stakeholder value. How textbook defines it today - A PM is the person on a product team who is responsible for choosing the right problems to go after, defining what success looks like, and guiding their team to achieve successful outcomes. Other definition - Real role of a PM in the org is to work with a team to create the right product that balances meeting business needs with solving user problems. Which one sounds better?
