A Perspective of A Young Professional. A recent dialogue with the CHRO of a rising startup shed light on the evolving priorities of today’s fresh graduates when choosing an employer. A budding HR professional provided key insights that reflect a shift in what young workers value: First Contact: The first interaction with a potential employer is crucial. It sets the tone, showing whether the company is welcoming and patient, and if it values understanding and nurturing new talent. Researching the Company: Young professionals thoroughly investigate potential employers, focusing on the longevity of the founders, managers, and peers. This reflects the company’s culture and stability, which are vital for those seeking long-term opportunities. Workplace Logistics and Safety: Practicalities like commute distance and workplace safety are significant. Accessibility and a secure environment are essential for maintaining work-life balance and well-being. Understanding Personal Space and Time: Corporates in India must recognize the growing importance of personal space and time for young professionals. This generation places a high value on work-life balance and seeks employers who respect and support their need for personal time and space. I believe these observations was an eye opener for me as it underscores the need for companies to align their practices with the expectations of the young workforce, focusing on transparency, cultural fit, and respect for personal boundaries to attract and retain top talent.

Being flexible often gets a bad rap at the workplace… You’re seen as weak and wimpy, especially by your seniors. But what truly defines #flexibility? If you see materials—too much rigidity makes it brittle and it can break. At the same time the other extreme makes things shapeless and weak. True flexibility is about striking the perfect balance—neither too rigid, nor shapeless; not too stiff, not too slack. Even with our body—flexibility is a key objective of Yoga because that is an indicator of the body being in peak physical condition. Similarly at work, flexibility can perhaps be one of our greatest strengths. How? "Flexibility" in the #workplace refers to the ability to adapt to and accommodate changes in work arrangements etc., to meet the needs of the organization and employees. I would simply say ‘A Fair and Reasonable Allowance given in situations that require it’ Which means we consider aspects of impact to the employee, firm, team members and allow a deviation from the norm. What flexibility is not: At work, we also see managers who are conflict avoiders or those who can’t say NO. Agreeing to something doesn’t make you flexible. That's just you succumbing to your inabilities. Flexibility is a conscious attempt to support progress but it needs courage. Because you need to take a call and you can be questioned on whether it was the right call. Most times, it’s the fear of looking bad or taking a wrong decision that makes managers take safe but inflexible stands. In the name of fairness, many organizations have policies which need to be followed and anything outside of that needs to be an exception—this design just kills the ability to be flexible because very few people want to ask for an exception. Yes, all things need balance, reasonableness and fairness. Humans are unique, and their situations and needs vary—we cannot box everyone into a single policy document. Hence “allowing flexibility where reasonable” has to become a more mainstream strategy and that will be a true sign of a #progressive and #happier workplace. #HappinessHabits #OurHappinessMatters #WorkplaceFlexibility
