The ASER (The Annual Status of Education Report) 2023 report has highlighted a concerning rise in dropout rates among India’s youth. While only 3.9% of 14-year-olds are out of school, this figure escalates to a staggering 32.6% by the age of 18. 📊 A variety of factors, including financial hardships, lack of access to higher education, and societal pressures, contribute to this alarming trend. Through the SHIKSHA Initiative, we are committed to tackling this challenge by ensuring that access to education knows no limits. We work with the mission to create lifelong learners by enhancing the learning process and utilizing a technology-enabled learning program. So far, we have impacted more than 210,000 students, making strides toward a more inclusive, educated future. Addressing Unprofessional Practices in the Delhi Retail MBO Sector I've had a frustrating experience with some Delhi retailers in the MBO sector. The unprofessional behavior, including delayed payments, lack of respect, unresponsive communication, and even abusive language, is disheartening. Such unethical practices hinder business growth and create a negative environment for all parties involved. I urge all company owners and CEOs to take necessary actions to address these issues. Let's work together to create a more professional and respectful business environment. Here are some suggestions to consider: - Implementing a robust payment system - Setting clear communication channels - Establishing a performance-based evaluation system - Providing training on professional conduct - Encouraging a culture of respect and empathy Together, we can make a difference.

citiesRISE undertook implementation studies for Gratitude, Kindness and Hope interventions in schools in India. The intervention in schools includes age-specific in-class curriculum, teacher training, and creating action groups. The classroom intervention was implemented over 8 weeks, teacher training over 12 weeks, and the action board planned for the entire school year. Several participants, including students and teachers, offered positive feedback on this intervention. Before-and-after surveys with 1,714 students found statistically significant improvements in wellbeing, resilience, self-esteem, and social connectedness. Chit Chat Challenge: A Unique Approach to Public Speaking at Sakalya Wisdom Early Years At Sakalya Wisdom Early Years Sakalya Wisdom Foundation, we believe that preschool is the perfect time to introduce children to public speaking. Developing confidence and communication skills at an early age sets a strong foundation for their future. Embracing Public Speaking from an Early Age Public speaking can be a daunting task for many, but we aim to make it an exciting and enjoyable experience for our young learners. Regular exposure to speaking in front of an audience, using a microphone, and facing peers and adults helps children become comfortable and confident communicators. The "My Body" Theme: Setting the Stage Our recent "My Body" theme provided the perfect backdrop for the Chit Chat Challenge. This theme is integral to our curriculum, helping children understand their bodies, the functions of different organs, and the importance of health and wellness. It was the ideal opportunity to integrate a public speaking challenge that would reinforce their learning while enhancing their communication skills. The Chit Chat Challenge: A Unique Format The Chit Chat Challenge was designed to be a step above traditional recitations or prepared speeches. Before the main event, our teachers conducted several dry rehearsals within the classroom. This preparation helped them become familiar with the process, reducing any anxiety they might have about speaking in front of an audience. On the day of the event, children were presented with chits, each containing a picture of a different body organ. This added an element of surprise and spontaneity to the activity. The challenge encouraged children to apply their cognitive skills before speaking. They had to recall what they had learned about the specific body part, organize their thoughts quickly, and articulate them clearly. This exercise not only reinforced their understanding of the topic but also helped develop critical thinking and spontaneous speaking skills. The highlight of the Chit Chat Challenge was watching the children perform fearlessly and confidently in front of a school audience. Their enthusiasm and poise were evident as they spoke about their chosen organs. More Than Traditional Education By integrating activities that promote public speaking, critical thinking, and spontaneous expression, we ensure that our students receive a well-rounded education that prepares them for future challenges. The Chit Chat Challenge is just one of the many ways we strive to provide an education that goes beyond the classroom, preparing our children for a bright and confident future. What is the cultural capital that children bring to the ECE centre or school? And how can it make a difference?   Working to create a Mother-Tongue Based Multi-Lingual #ECE for four tribal languages in Odisha (Kui, Juanga, Saora and Munda) over 2010-12, our team members began by spending a few weeks in their villages. Here are some findings about children between the ages of 3-6 years from these tribes.   1.    Most children were involved in caring for the animals, helping in household chores, even contributing to economic activities (such as sorting mahua). 2.    Children were at home when adults were not present, taking responsibility for many activities within home. (All this meant that, in their mother-tongues, they could follow instructions and report on what they had done, before they entered class 1.) 3.    Older children were able to care for their younger ones. 4.    Children were able to take care of themselves, including washing their clothes. 5.    Children had strong emotional bonds with each other, family members, with animals and the community on the whole. In many places, a child could walk into any home in the village and be fed or taken care of as if she was from that home. 6.    Children had many physical abilities and skills. For instance, they seemed very good at aiming, say, a stone at something. (Though we couldn’t figure out why this particular skill was so strongly developed). 7.    Though all children were unable to use Odia, when put together in an activity that involved children of different tribes in playing a game together, somehow they were able to find ways to play or work together. 8.    Children moved around freely in their surroundings, often in areas that might be considered far from home. 9.    They also displayed strong problem-solving skills. E.g. young children got together to create a water channel in loose soil to move water accumulating near a handpump, on their own.   When children with this background come to an Anganwadi or the class 1 of a school – how would you use their cultural capital to design the educational process best suited for them?   And, currently, why do we continue to ignore the considerable strengths our children bring to school and go on to label them poor learners?   And why do children from such backgrounds continue to remain deprived of inputs that lead to gaps which cannot be covered in a lifetime?
