I've always believed that #digital is where news discovery takes place, while traditional media such as #print and #broadcast are go-to resources for 'Analysis, Views and Counter-Views'. Print resurgence can be attributed largely to digital fatigue and better engagement due to being less distracted. Come to think of it, how much more focused are we when we read the Op-Ed in a #newspaper, a long form article in a #magazine or even a book of fiction or non-fiction? Better reading outcomes with better retention are engendered in print while digital scores in personalization through news curation. Chai Par Charcha or Facebook Par Charcha ?  As technology advances and social media platforms proliferate, it's paradoxically become easier to connect with others while simultaneously becoming more isolated. Despite the illusion of connectivity provided by social media, many people experience profound feelings of loneliness and isolation.  In a world where self-promotion and individualism often take precedence,  the need for   face to face socializing is being increasingly felt by the scientists and psychologists alike.  Genuine human connection releases neurotransmitters like ‘oxytocin’, often referred to as the "love hormone," which promotes feelings of trust, bonding, and relaxation. Spending time with others also provides emotional support, validation, and a sense of belonging, all of which are essential for maintaining psychological well-being. These relationships provide a source of support, joy, and fulfilment that cannot be replaced by material possessions or digital interactions. In essence, socializing serves as a counterbalance to the self-centric tendencies prevalent in today's world. Like intermittent fasting, one of the ways to remain mentally healthy is a tendency called intermittent digital detoxing. Intermittent digital detoxing, akin to intermittent fasting for the mind, has emerged as a crucial practice in the digital age. Just as intermittent fasting offers a break from continuous calorie intake, digital detoxing provides respite from the incessant consumption of information and screen time. It's essential because our constant connectivity can overwhelm our mental bandwidth, leading to burnout, anxiety, and decreased productivity. By incorporating intermittent digital detoxing, individuals can regain control over their attention, allowing for deeper focus, enhanced creativity, and improved mental well-being. In 2020, MediaOne took a bold step forward by introducing the first-ever Social Media Rating for Malayalam news channels in Kerala, possibly the first of its kind in India and certainly in South India. While BARC remained the traditional currency for TV ratings with its GRP measurements, based on a limited number of meters across millions of viewers, we wanted a system that counted every viewer—something more transparent and reflective of real-time engagement. Thus, every Thursday at 11 AM, as BARC released its data, we rolled out our Social Media Rating card, providing a fresh and direct way to gauge audience viewership. And the result? MediaOne has consistently held the No. 1 position for the majority of weeks throughout the year. It didn’t take long for competitors to notice—and follow suit, releasing their own social media ratings when the data worked in their favor. However, on August 14, 2024, Facebook discontinued the service of CrowdTangle, a tool crucial for publishers to analyze viewership performance and competitor comparisons. Despite this, we took one final dataset—our last 7-day performance—and it fell during the aftermath of the devastating Wayanad landslide disaster. Once again, MediaOne maintained its competitive edge, securing the No. 1 spot. This achievement is a testament to the dedication of my incredible team and, most importantly, the continued support of our viewers. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this possible. There is a significant meltdown of global business across film TV and content creation in Hollywood and the world’s leading studios are in a massive reset mode as a result of the prolonged strikes in 2023. The ripple effects on our amazingly successful VFX and animation services industry in India are consequently devastating. This situation underscores a key lesson: growth and comfort do not coexist.
