Restoration of any heritage structure is indeed a difficult task. It is a challenge for a whole set of professionals and stakeholders, which include conservation architects, engineers, town planners, civic administrators, historians, current and future owners/users, contractors, financiers, skilled workers, craftsmen, material suppliers, project managers…..the list can go on! A bigger challenge lies in answering the following rather innocuous questions: Can the structure be restored at all? If yes, how should one go about it? Who is capable of doing it? Who shall take responsibility for ensuring the retention of the heritage value? Is the heritage structure to be restored on the priority list? How long will it take to restore? What is the cost of restoring it? Is it worthwhile spending it? ….Lastly, after restoring it, what should be done? One can discern that almost none of the questions can be answered in an affirmative tone by one single stakeholder. The decision-making must emerge in a truly consensual manner. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (former President of Bharat) served as a Professor at Mysore University during the first decade of the 20th century. During his academic tenure, he resided in this University bungalow. Since the 1970s this bungalow was in a dilapidated condition in which a portion of the bungalow had collapsed. The restoration and strengthening work was completed from August 2011 to September 2012. Acknowledgements: Client: University of Mysore Patron: PES Group of Institutes Contractor: Sri.
