Over the past few years, there has been a growing consensus that capital needs to shift from the ‘do no harm’ premise to the ‘create positive impact’ premise. This shift has built significant momentum for financing more green and sustainable activities. Despite the traction and momentum in the sector, terms such as ‘climate finance,’ ‘green finance,’ and ‘sustainable finance’ are often conflated. This brief aims to elucidate the relationship between these concepts, providing clarity for stakeholders and practitioners in the field. Climate Policy Initiative - India’s Senior Manager, Saarthak Khurana, moderated India Global Forum’s virtual dialogue on ‘Powering Tomorrow: Innovations in Green Hydrogen.’ Key takeaways from the session were: 1. Different frameworks and definitions are emerging in the rapidly evolving landscape of green hydrogen. Achieving coherence and traceability necessitates collaboration among stakeholders. 2. As technologies mature and evolve, we witness an increasingly competitive tech environment. 3. Moreover, the successful deployment of technology will hinge on specific applications, and these nuances must be reflected in policy and incentive designs. 4. Traditional economic and financial frameworks may not suffice for these breakthrough solutions. Innovative financing and contractual structures are imperative. 5. The government has made significant strides in supporting the green hydrogen ecosystem. However, some segments of the value chain still require further assistance. Therefore, more targeted policies and incentives are essential. As a panelist aptly said, "ye dil mange more" (the heart desires more). By fostering collaboration, embracing innovative financial models, and refining policy frameworks, we can collectively drive the growth and success of the green hydrogen sector. Panel members: Gaurav Agnihotri, Naveen Ahlawat, Nishaanth Balashanmugam, Ajeya Bandyopadhyay, Rajat Bharadwaj, Vipul Garg, Hiren Mehta, Anvesha Paresh Thakker, Ian Williamson #GreenHydrogen #GreenEnergy #SustainableInvestments #SustainableDevelopment

Over centuries, economic shifts like the move from horse-cart to motor cars have brought benefits and challenges. Today, carbon-intensive sectors must transform to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. However, a low-carbon transition alone is insufficient. A just transition, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, ensures equity and prosperity. In this article, Climate Policy Initiative’s Manager, Md Tariq Habib, Senior Manager Saarthak Khurana, and Director Vivek Sen analyze critical sectors like power, mobility, and hard-to-abate industries and how innovative policies, financial resources, and re-skilling programs can make the transition non-disruptive to the existing channels and networks. They also emphasize that collaborative efforts from government, industry, financial, research, and philanthropic institutions are essential for a fair and sustainable future.
