Now we await COP 2025 where the Basel Convention might include the HKC specifically for ships. At the same time we need the technical guidance provided in the Basel Convention to be included in the HKC. While working in ship recycling and management of hazard waste we do look up to the technical guidance notes for reference provided in the Basel Convention. We understand that HKC is not enough in itself, both the connections are important and both must be applied with clear application of provisions of The BC in the HKC. Torridge District Council submits revised plans for Appledore Clean Maritime Innovation Centre Torridge District Council has announced the submission of revised plans for the Appledore Clean Maritime Innovation Centre (ACMIC), following a thorough consultation process with the public and stakeholders. The updated application, identified as ref: 1/1179/2023/LA, reflects significant changes based on community feedback and evolving construction cost considerations. Councillor Ken James, Leader of Torridge District Council, commented on the updates: “Whilst this a positive and considered response to public feedback, the revised plans also consider ongoing construction cost inflation. As such, we have looked to improve the efficiency of the building, by optimising the lettable area, reducing ancillary spaces and ensuring that the completed building fully responds to current and future market requirements. We strongly believe that these amendments ensure that we have the right plans for the right location, which we hope will put Appledore and Torridge at the forefront of innovation and investment in clean maritime energy.” The updated plans for the ACMIC are now available for public viewing on the Torridge District Council Portal. Preparing to moderate the Isle of Man Maritime ESG panel has led me to a teasingly exciting realisation: #ESG is fundamentally about alignment, and its roots stretch back centuries further than we typically acknowledge. It got me thinking about history, and I zoomed back in time to the voyages of Columbus...seeing it not just as a historical expedition - but as an early, rudimentary form of proto-ESG investing. Not convinced? Ok, run with me... The Spanish King and Queen Ferdinand and Isabella backed Columbus not just for economic gain, but because his values aligned with their vision for the world. In this case religious, with a sprinkling of conquest, and yes ok greed. So suddenly we see that their investment considered long-term, non-financial outcomes - which is a core tenet of modern ESG. It involved collaboration between investors (the Crown), operators (Columbus), and even industry (shipbuilders, chandlers, seafarers) - mirroring today's ESG ecosystems. This historical parallel becomes a powerful lens through which we can critically examine modern ESG practices. So here are some questions... How has our understanding of "aligned investing" evolved since Columbus's time? Are today's ESG metrics truly capturing the essence of value alignment? How do we balance faith in long-term outcomes against short-term pressures? At the panel, we'll challenge the conventional wisdom about ESG. We'll dig deep into its antecedents, its current applications, and its future evolution. By understanding ESG as part of a long historical continuum of aligned investing, we can make it a more powerful and effective tool for positive change. Day 183 of the Red Sea crisis -and other news Half a year has gone since the major shipping lines began diverting around Africa and another vessel is now likely to soon be lost to the sea. The bulk carrier “Tutor” which was hit by both a drone boat and a missile a few days ago has seen all crew being evacuated by allied military forces in the region. One crew member is missing after the attack. The vessel is adrift with severe flooding, a damaged engine room and unlit and hence other traffic should be cautious to avoid a collision. Yesterday US forces destroyed 2 drone boats, one attack drones as well as 7 radar installations inside Yemen used for targeting purposes by the Houthies. CMA CGM announced a range of new rates and surcharges. A few examples: New FAK rates for Indian Subcontinent to Latin America. As an example the level to East Coast South America becomes 6500 USD/20’ and 7500 USD/40’ from July 1st. In addition this is subject to a PSS of 500 USD/20’ and 1000 USD/40’. A PSS from Mediterranean, Africa, Middle East and Oceania to US West Coast of 3000 USD/40’ from July 10th. A PSS from Oceania to Europe of 1500 USD/40’ from July 1st. A PSS from Indian subcontinent and Middle East to US East Coast of 1000 USD per container from July 15th A PSS from Asia to Middle East and Indian subcontinent of 2000 USD/40’ from June 20th. This is twice the level announced by Hapag-Lloyd also yesterday. The German carrier announced 1000 USD/40’ from Far East to Indian subcontinent from July 1st.

Oceana threatens legal action over harm to UK seas from latest offshore oil and gas licensing Oceana UK is preparing to take the government to court over the severe threat to marine life caused by the latest licences for oil and gas exploration in UK waters. The decision to issue the new licences was unlawful on several grounds, says the charity, including a failure to consider the extreme impacts of both accidental oil spills and the climate crisis on marine life. In addition, both the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero and the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) ignored advice from independent government experts about the potential effect on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), Oceana claims.  Represented by the environment team at law firm Leigh Day , Oceana UK has written to Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho, setting out its concerns and signalling the start of the judicial review process.  Some 82 licences for exploratory oil and gas drilling operations were issued by NSTA between October 2023 and May 2024. The licences cover 226 areas (blocks), and over a third overlap with MPAs.  Oceana UK says the ‘Appropriate Assessments’ for the blocks, published by the Offshore Petroleum Regulator for Environment and Decommissioning (OPRED) for the Secretary of State under the Habitat Regulations 2017, were unlawful. Green Marine UK’s hydrogen CTV (Crew Transfer Vessel) retrofit initiative – Project Verdant – awarded ‘Approval in Principle’ by RINA National Maritime SME Award winners, Green Marine (UK) Ltd pioneering maritime initiative aiming to retrofit CTVs (Crew Transfer Vessels) with hydrogen, fuel cells and battery – to cut emissions while servicing offshore wind farms – has been granted Approval in Principle (AiP) by global classification society Royal Institution of Naval Architects Phase 1 of Project Verdant, involving a preliminary design and feasibility study, has now been completed and deemed viable, opening the door to subsequent project phases seeking to execute design, engineering and sea trials. Led by Green Marine UK, the Innovate UK funded project includes maritime consultancy Waves Group Ltd and EMEC: European Marine Energy Centre (European Marine Energy Centre). Project Verdant’s conceptual design incorporates hydrogen fuel cells connected to electric motors, working in conjunction with existing diesel-fuelled engines, which can be shut down to enable zero emission operation at slow speed while servicing offshore wind farms. Global leader in hydrogen systems and marine fuel cell generators Energys helped design and provide engineering and modelling. Meanwhile, Engineered Marine Systems (EMS) supplied a design for the battery room, drawn from its extensive experience involving multiple hybrid CTVs. How are seafarers being affected by the move to decarbonisation and introduction of new fuel technology? In the new episode of Sea Views, Adam Parnell and I talk with Chirag Bahri from International Seafarers'​ Welfare & Assistance Network (ISWAN) and Ian Grainger from The Shipowners'​ Club (P&I insurance) about new research. The majority of seafarers support the move to decarbonisation but this research with 400 seafarers worldwide has revealed significant impact upon their work load as well as increased levels of anxiety about a variety of risks for the seafarers when implementing the new fuel technology on board ships. Most of the published research on new fuels in maritime is focused on technical, operational and of course financial research questions so this research about the impact on people is important. Ships 🚢 don't work without people so the impact on the seafarer must be taken into account when considering the use of alternative fuels. This includes their physical safety and health, their mental wellbeing and importantly, their psychological safety in respect of their levels of comfort with using alternative fuels. This illustrates well how a regional approach to a global issue invariably leads to suboptimization. It is not a matter of “blaming” the carriers for using a loophole - keep in mind that the alternative would be to have services to Europe never call UK directly and solely service Britain through transshipment. Rather, this is the inevitable result of a global issue being addressed with local regulation. Or, perhaps, convince the Brits to join the ETS.

"Banner Blindness & Information Overload" An effect of Information Overload is that user of the internet and computers in general overlook, or worse, ignore the most obvious or important information. As a company that concentrates purely on Maritime Compliance we are well aware that the information we provide to Yachts is only a small percentage of the tidal wave of information that they receive from multiple other sources and especially at this time of year the receivers may already be at Information Overload levels. Knowing the yacht, captain and crew means that we can filter important and relevant information as well as provide additional information and guidance to match their individual needs. This ensures that important information is not overlooked, latest requirements are implemented and industry best practices are being followed. With Yacht Operations, Guests, Finances, Itineraries all bombarding an Operational Manager and those onboard with information we are content to help reduce this overload and often wonder how those without assistance can truly operate at the highest of Safety & Compliance standards.

Day 202 of the Red Sea crisis – and other news No new attacks reported yesterday from the Houthies. US forces engaged and destroyed 2 boat drones and 2 radar installations. TS Lines is now also joining the trend to launch deep-sea services with small vessels as they join Sea-Lead shipping on the Transpacific. This is a trend fully identical to the one during the pandemic disruptions where high freight rates makes it financially attractive to start such services. And as all vessels are already deployed, this insertion means that some of TS Lines’ vessels are pulled out of intra-Asia services – for details see below link to The Loadstar. Maersk has updated their overview of Peak Season Surcharges across the globe. They are now listing 103 different PSS and 3 expired PSS. This could be compared to the overview they issued just 6 days ago which at the time “only” included 72 PSS charges globally. Top scorers are Middle East and Indian subcontinent to USWC at 7000 USD/40’, a range of Far East countries to Kenya and Tanzania with a PSS of 5000 USD/40’ and China to Senegal at 5300 USD/40’. CMA CGM announced a PSS from India to a range of West and Southwest African countries at 500 USD/20’ and 300 USD/40’. Yes, higher PSS for 20’ than 40’. Incidentally, Maersk (despite the long list) does not have a PSS listed on this trade amongst the 103 PSS corridors. The latest weekly report from FIS (Freight Investor Services) regarding indicated pricing levels for Container Freight Forward Agreements (CFFA) is that pricing levels will remain around 8000 USD/FFE through September in Asia-USWC and 8500 USD/FFE on Asia-USEC. On the Europe trades the levels through September are around 8500-8600 on Asia-North Europe and 7700 USD/FFE on Asia-Med. For these trades the CFFA price indications are for only modest declines in the range of 600-1000 USD/FFE in Q4. Many headlines yesterday focused on MSC now having a 20% marketshare in terms of fleet size which is indeed a marked development. However, I find it equally illuminating to look at the development since the dawn of the millenium for some of the main carriers. On Jan 1st Maersk (called Maersk Sealand at the time) was the largest with a fleet size of 620,000 TEU. Today they have 4.3 Million TEU. MSC was ranked fifth with a fleet of 225,000 TEU – today they have 6 million TEU. But CMA CGM has grown even faster than MSC in this period from 125,000 TEU in Jan 2000 to now 3.75 Million TEU. Evergreen on the contrary has grown quite slowly from 320,000 TEU in 2000 to now being at 1.7 Million TEU slipping from being the 2nd largest carrier to now being the 7th largest. 6 of the top-10 carriers at the time no longer exist as independent carriers: P&O Nedlloyd, Hanjin, APL, NYK, CP Ships and MOL. updated link to The Loadstar: https://lnkd.in/ddVNXZQn

Scotland Launches Consultation on Offshore Marine Conservation Measures The Scottish Government has launched a public consultation on proposed fisheries management measures for 20 Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Scotland’s offshore waters. These measures are part of a broader effort to protect and restore marine ecosystems, addressing longstanding commitments to safeguard these critical areas. The consultation outlines potential restrictions on the use of specific fishing equipment, including demersal mobile and static gear, across 15 of the designated sites. In some cases, zoned restrictions are suggested, while full site-wide exclusions are proposed for five other sites where such measures are deemed necessary to meet conservation goals. The Scottish MPA network now encompasses more than 230 sites, covering 37% of Scotland’s seas. Each MPA is designated to protect specific features, from deep-sea sponge aggregations to cold-water coral reefs and ocean quahog, a clam species that can live for over 400 years. The consultation will be open until 14 October 2024, providing stakeholders with an opportunity to contribute their views. We work with a lot of international interview process at SYR - Shoreside Superyacht Recruitment In some cases the cost to attend an interview can reach well into the hundreds and in a couple of cases over €1,000 for a couple of days trip with accommodation Some employers will openly and outwardly confirm they will cover the travel costs, whereas others expect this to be covered by the candidate.
